3 Injured From Light Pole On Main Street

Sounds like the winds took it down. I know you have to watch for branches in the parks during days like this but you wouldn't think light pole. Yikes!

it looked like it just ripped out at the base. My assumption is that the concrete holding it in place has been weakened over time with so much water- as well as more lights added on to the pole to assist with better parade lighting. It was just time for it to fall given all of the wind. I saw another post that said the whole Town Square was closed off while they investigated each pole. I guess Flag Retreat is off today?

My husband was saying that the base of the poles really need to always be made sure to not have rusted over time and such or this will happen. So hopefully they go around to look not just at that area but around the parks at all those light poles and anything else that could have that happen.

the town square was closed off most of the day yesterday to allow the engineers to examine the posts. Dont know of any status today.

this was posted on MiceChat today (or yesterday?)
"Soon after our update posted this morning (and shortly after park opening), today’s blustery weather caused a lighting pole in Town Square to blow over, injuring at least two guests. The pole was in the process of being replaced in preparation for the Candlelight Processional, which will take place in Town Square on Dec. 2 and 3. The park does not expect it to cause issues for the event, but the right side of Town Square was closed this morning."

interesting - so did they just prop it up and forget about it? LOL

If that is the case Disney is going to be needing to pay up a bit on that one besides medical care those injured had. That is irresponsible of them if they did that. Even if it wasn't propped up it was something they knew needed to be replaced...event or not that is not something to put off. If they had to remove it before it fell and put something over the space as a cover because they had to wait for a part that would have been better than this happening even. SMH

One more note. A follow up post I saw (either Scott gusting or Disneyland news today) said that it appears that the pole was buried directly into the ground not with a concrete base with braces and secure attachments. So it rusted the metal. If true - wow it could have been something akin to what happened during Paul Pressler',s final years with The Columbia and Big Thunder - poor maintenance and cutting corners. Yikes!

YIKES! If that is the case that is not good. Even with the concrete base things can happen because of rust and just breaking down over time. I've been married to a guy who's career has been maintenance work, No cutting corners and if anyone tried to it would drive him nuts. Not only can accidents happen but it doesn't mean something is repaired correctly or it whatever issue(s) comes right back fast and needs to be dealt with again. After the Pressler years, you would think that of all things Disney would have learned you can NOT cheapen, lax or short cut on maintenance at all. Thankfully this was not worse than it could have been. Yet this is sounding like something that could have been avoided if it was taken care of sooner.
