    2019

    Dec. 31, 2018
3 years and 5 days from our last trip to the resort, we activated our 2019 Annual Passes. The two olders (now 14 & 11) were grateful and nostalgic to be back where so much of their early childhood was spent. The little fella, now nearly 8, surprised us with how much of the parks he'd forgotten in three years.
We were in DLP from about 9 to 2pm and then again 8pm to 10:30. In DCA we rang in the New Year 10:30pm to 1:30am and were there for a short stint 7:30 to 8:15 to ride IncrediCoaster for the first time since it was rethemed.
Speaking of retheming, everyone was pleasantly surprised at how fun and cool the Guardians of the Galaxy ride is. As purists and The Twilight Zone enthusiasts, we all groaned at the thought of moving on from the original ride. Rod Serling will remain a favorite, but we're big fans of what the imagineers did with this. We got the Jackson 5 "I Want You Back" version. According to the cast member it's a difficult one to get. I know next to nothing about the ride so that was the first I'd heard of there being more than a single version. Rumor is there are six. Looking forward to seeing them. RSR & TSMM beckoned though.

    The day's rides, in order:
Pirates, Haunted Mansion Holiday, it's a small world Holiday, Casey jr., Indiana Jones Adv. (the little guy is not a fan. At. All.), Mater's Jingle Jamboree, IncrediCoaster, Matterhorn, Autopia, Space Mountain, Monsters inc., Turtle Talk with Crush, Guardians of the Galaxy, Radiator Springs Racers, IncrediCoaster, TSMM, Soarin'.

Nice! Sounds like a successful return! The NYE thing is really something else, isn't it!?

I decided to try that last year, spent most of the day in DL IIRC, though I might have migrated over to DCA very briefly (wanted to be safe about not getting locked out of DL if it reached capacity, so I didn't do much at DCA, I don't think - would need to check my notes). My strategy for the insanity at midnight was to mill around in the circular walkways around the Hub (since I could not see camping for hours and hours to get a normal stagnant spot on Main Street or in the Hub). At a point, the traffic essentially froze, so wherever everyone was at that point was where they would be for the countdown to midnight. I ended up in a spot behind some of the trees, but could see the Castle a fair bit through them and enough of the fireworks to call the strategy a success for my purposes.

Hope you and your family had (or are still having) a good trip. (Hoping you got to spend more than just one day after a 3 year absence.) I see your IASW pic was during daylight, so hopefully you get to at least see the facade at night also. I love what they do to that ride for the Holidays.

Thanks for the welcome back, Dave. Due to high winds, NYE fireworks were cancelled at the resort. We discovered the best place to be at the stroke of midnight is entering Cars Land and then the RSR queue which (reopened a minute or two after midnight) was empty. We walked right on.

Just the single day visit for now and were fine with it. We activated on a blockout and have to wait a few to return, but from Jan. 6 to Dec. 20 or so well have nearly a full year of uninterrupted access to the parks. There are a lot of visits upcoming.

Nice to see you back. Have always loved reading your trip reports. Wow the kids have grown a lot!

My daughter, sister and I just visited December 17 - 21 and had a great trip. Look forward to seeing more trip reports.

I know you are. I noticed and have been excited to hear about your trip. We were there for Spring Break nearly 5 years ago. Fell in love with AK.

MaxPass ranks right up there with the printing press, the wheel, the steam engine, and electricity. Great, great invention. I may be late to the party on this. For someone, such as myself, who spent an inordinate amount of time running around collecting paper fastpasses, MaxPass completely transforms the park experience. What a delight.

The main order of the day was to add MaxPass and get acclimated to it. You can add the single day $15 version on your phone, but have to visit a ticket booth for the AP version good all year. That was not efficient process and actually required several trips to the ticket booths, but once it was finally dialed in, I was amazed at how well it worked. And the park wi-fi blows the doors off what it used to be.

The second order of the day was getting a hot link corndog at Corn Dog Castle. Only then did my return to the parks feel complete. The boys dined on fusilli pasta Pizza Port and the ladies ate at SmokeJumpers, but I held out for the corndog and apple slices, a decision I did not regret.

We were in the parks roughly 2:30 to 10:30 and took very few pictures.

    Rides were:
Splash, Winnie the Pooh, Splash again, Space Mountain, Star Tours, IJA (the little fella did far better this time), Silly Symphony, Aeriel's, RSR, Guardians, Mater's, Buzz, BTMRR, PoTC, Autopia, Buzz again.
