I was doing some news research when I found this UPI article....

http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20020920-045700-3320r

Which has some good information about rental cars, but what caught my eye was this...

Among the urban areas that are becoming increasingly tourist-friendly, at least in discovering which bus or rail to take, is Los Angeles. On that transit system's Web site -- mta.net -- it's possible to get a complete printout of travel schedules and connections.

For example, the system's computers let you type in a starting point and a destination. As an example, typing in LAX (as the starting point) and Knott's Berry Farm in Orange County (as the destination), the computer quickly shows the routing, listing the bus and rail connections necessary. Specific locations of the transfers are shown as well as instructions on how much money to give the driver or train conductor.

You have the option of listing specific travel times.

And if you have a suitably equipped computer, you can even print out full-color routing maps of bus and rail lines as well as all of the system's schedules.

Los Angeles is not the only city to have the service, but its automated system is among the easiest to operate and is extremely quick.

And here is the link to the actual site...

So, I have seen these type questions asked in the past, this looks like a great tool.

The one drawback is that it does not include the Orange County Transit system information.

Here is their website...
