SoCal residents can get $10 off the cost of an AP by buying it online between now and 12/31 at www.disneyland.com/westways. The ad is on the back of the recent Westways magazine sent to SoCal AAA members.

Last year, they offered a $10 gift card if you bought an AP, but the AP didn't have to be purchased online. We are now in a bit of a quandry as we want to use our new AP for the first time on a blockout day. Can we buy the voucher online in advance and avoid paying for the blockout or should we take the safe route of buying a PH and upgrading to an AP once inside. Obviously, the $10 AAA savings is not worth it if we have to pay $40 because our first day is a blockout day.

Thanks -- Suzanne

Yes, the first day of USE of a new AP is always not blocked out, that is to allow them to process the AP and take your photo.

I would get an AP voucher and save the $10.

What happens when you buy a multi-day parkhopper to get those wonderful early entries, then use the parkhopper on what would normally be blackout days - can you still upgrade to an annual pass on the last day? Or can you only upgrade to the Premium no-blackout-day pass?

First off, this question has no direct relationship to the AAA discount for AP's, as to get the discount, you have to buy the AP directly, and online.

But if you are talking about AP's in general, then for most folks, you want to buy an 3 day or longer Multi-Day ParkHopper first. The ParkHopper allows you at least one day of Early Entry, and during your first visit, you don't have to worry about Blockout dates.

For example, somebody buying a 6 day ParkHopper and using it every day from December 26th thru the 31st, every day of the visit would be a blockout for the Deluxe AP.

On December 31st, when you have entered Disneyland for the last time that day, you just head to the Bank of Main Street, where Disney will give you full credit of what you paid for the ParkHopper towards an AP that costs more, so you could get a Deluxe for just a few dollars more.

It doesn't matter when you upgrade, so long as it is during your first visit, and on a day that you have a valid entry, the first, in the middle, or the last day. Same full credit. The one thing the CM is supposed to do is backdate the expiration date, so for the example above, the expiration date should be 12/26/08, but on occasion, the CM forgets to override the computer.

Last year's AAA promotion did not require that the AP be purchased online. So we bought discounted 3 day PHs and upgraded them on the last day. By showing our AAA card, we received a $10 gift card for each AP, which made the decision to upgrade really easy since the upgrade price to the SoCal APs was only $5.

Although the terms of the deal in this year's ad requires purchase online, it couldn't hurt to pull out the AAA card when you upgrade to see if you can get the discount. What's published in the ad and what is given to the CMs may not be exactly the same. -- Suzanne
