So, my friend and her family of five are going down to DLR the first week of OCtober. She has reserved a suite at the Portofino Inn. She was looking on line yesterday and stumbled upon some reviews and they were terrible! Has anyone stayed there? Is it an ok hotel? She tried to find another hotel but everything is sold out for that week. Thanks for the info!

I stayed there once and I had an okay experience. I didn't stay in a family suite, so I can't speak for those rooms.

A coworker of mine stayed there a few years ago. He said the hotel was OK, but nothing more. However, his stay was tainted when his van was broken into while parked at the Portofino. Somebody smashed a window and stole his kids' CD players and all their CDs. While the kids were bummed about losing their stuff, he said the most frustrating part was dealing with incident and trying to get his van window fixed while being on vacation. Obviously, this was no fun.

The Anaheim Police Department told my coworker they were pretty sure it was an inside job. Thus, guest beware.

My sister and I had reservations to stay here about a year ago. We walked into our room and left the property shortly there after. It was filthy! The scariest place I have ever been to. Reminded me of where porn movies might be filmed. I kid you not. Also, there had been people recently drinking in our room and on our patio. The front desk did not care. We were on the first floor, and our sliding door did not lock. It was just me and my sister...husbands stayed home. Again, the front desk did not care. We had been playing at DL all day and arrived at the Inn very late in the evening. We actually left in the middle of the night. We were terrified to stay at the Portofino Inn. Lucky for us, even though the Candy Cane Inn said they were booked they took us in (we normally stay at the CCI. But it was a last minute trip and they were booked). The outside of the Portofino looks nice enough. And so does the lobby. Our room....SCARY SCARY SCARY!!! Run away, run away as fast as you can, IMO.

Stayed there once, and although we didn't have the nightmare experience as some of the others, it's nothing to write home about. I don't recall it being filthy or feeling unsafe...but I do recall that our room was by the elevator and vending room, which was lousy and very noisy.

aymieb, I would suggest your friend start calling hotels near DL directly, if she hasn't already done so. Hotels typically hold back a few rooms for walk-ins and direct callers which are unavailable to web sites and travel agents. It's certainly worth a shot.

First on the list would be Howard Johnson's just down the street. Candy Cane Inn is great, but the rooms are somewhat small. Seriously, booking two rooms at the Candy Cane, if available, would likely be better than a suite at Portofino.

Now we didn't experience this because we didn't stay there long enough...but I have read about many people saying that they have had things stolen from their room while staying at the Portofino Inn; anywhere from cameras to dirty clothes.

That hotel right across from DCA, Annabelle, I believe is what is called is a really nice place in my opinion. I remember staying there and when DCA had the Luminarie firework who, you had a great view as long as your window was facing the park.
