I apologize for this thread not being "Disney" related but it sorta is :)

I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon from San Jose and I've heard that I-5 has been closed due to a large fire in Santa Clarita anyone heard any info about this? Also, is there a way I can bypass road? I'd hate to take 101 all the way there.

I haven't heard anything about the fire, but would 99 get you around it? Also, 101 isn't THAT much worse of a drive. ;)

I saw it on the news last night and the fire was 100% contained with a few "hot spots" they were keeping an eye on. The freeway was still a little sticky, but moving better. I figure that by now it should be better. It should be OK to use that freeway now.

Here is a number for CAL TRANS. 1-800-427-ROAD.

I, too, was worried about fires on my recent trip and this is the number I was told to check up with.

Have a safe fun trip!!

disguy -- Meteorologists are expecting record-breaking temperatures today throughout the state, including the Central Valley, which the I-5 cuts right through.

PLEASE be prepared for emergencies!!

- Make sure your tires are properly inflated, and that they are in good shape.

- Make sure to check your coolant/anti-freeze in the car.

- Take an extra couple of gallons of water with you in the car.

- Wear sunscreen IN the car. Even tinted windows do not prevent sun from searing your skin.

- Bring lots of water or sports drinks with you, or buy them at the gas stations along the way.

- Make sure your cell phone is charged, and you have your AAA card if you are a member.

- Bring an umbrella in the car. In case your car breaks down, you want shade while you look under the hood or wait outside.

99 and I5 merge just south of Bakersfield. The fire was much further south than that.

Okay just out of curiousity Lani, how long does it take you to get to Anaheim via 101 from the Bay Area (and where exactly in the Bay)? I leave for school in 9 days and it takes me 2 1/2 hours to get to San Luis Obispo from South San Jose. How much longer is it from there to Anaheim? I hope SLO to Anaheim isn't too far... I don't think it'd be more than 3 1/2 hours for 6 hours total (as opposed to about 5 - 5 1/2 hours if I take I-5. Anyway, if you can give me an estimate of how long it will take. I hope it's short!!! MUST VISIT DISNEYLAND....

Mapquest said 4 hours... but they exaggerate.. So am I correct in thinking 3 1/2 hours from SLO?? Also, what way do you go... 101 S to 5 S? Sorry if this is off-topic but Lani seems like a good person to ask.

I would actually take 101 to the 134 to the 5. I always seem to hit bad traffic on that stretch of the 101/5 that I can skip by taking the 134. I would say that between 3 1/2 and 4 hours is about right for how long it would take to get to DL from SLO, depending on traffic in LA.

. . . by taking the Coast Starlight. Spend the trip in the comfort of a nice, air-conditioned train. I'm not sure how you'd get from Union Station to Disneyland, but the Surfliners and the Orange County line of Metrolink do stop at Edison Field, from which you could take a cab to DLR.

I take 101 all the time from Menlo Park. It is about 3 hours from here to SLO, then about 4 hours to LA from there... but then we stop at least twice on each trip. Once you get to LA, you have a choice of taking 405 / Garden Grove,, or just go on to Rt. 5

If you plan to go on Rt 5 from San Jose, then take 101 down to Gilroy, then 152 over to Pacheco Pass. That takes you right over to Rt. 5. Stop at Casa de Fruta - very nice, down-home place and the best car-snacks you can possibly imagine.

I have a page with suggestions for stops on 101... http://pixiedustinn.com/CentralCalifornia.html
enjoy!

Basically I can think of 3 options from SLO... 101 to 5, 101 to 134 to 5, 101 to 405 to 10 to 5.... Mapquest seems to recommend 101 to 5 for the "fastest" route, but I question the traffic there...

Unless you are travelling during a >very< low traffic time period, you would be much better off going 101 to 405 to 105 to 710 to 91 to 5 instead of the above quoted route. This route avoids going through downtown.

-Jeff Actually, IF you choose 405, 405 to 22 to Katella (or Harbor. The freeway is angled, so I don't remembe which street has an exit) is probably the best. But honestly, I'd avoid that route all together. The 405 has a tendency to be really bad coming away from the 101. Depending on time of day, 101 to 5 is no problem, but 101 to 134 to 5 is a safe bet too.

So coming from San Jose, we basically take 101 to I think 152 (P-Pass) to I5 ....we take 5 all the way to aneheim. Is there a faster way to get to Anaheim then taking 5 all the way down? We make great time driving to LA but once we hit the city forget about it.

Nah...I don't think it's worth getting there so early and then no car and having to leave right on time...I like doing my own thing :)

The exit would be Harbor, although it is generally easier to take either Brookhurst or Euclid when exiting off the 22. I used to take that route all the time (I live near LAX) while they were doing heavy construction on the 91/5 interchange. Now that the construction is finished, the route that I recommended earlier is considerably faster. For one thing, the 22 route requires several miles of surface street driving while the 105-91-5 route is freeway all the way to the Disneyland Drive exit.

I do agree that it is probably generally better to avoid the 405 if possible, although it would likely be wise to know both routes and listen to traffic reports before the decision point.

Hrm.... I'm confused. Is 101 to 5 really that bad of traffic? I mean the 405 gets pretty bad at times...
