how do they set the river on fire???? and how are they able to extinguish it so quickly???

Natural gas. This is a common trick. There are natural gas lines just underneat the water. When turned on, the gas slowly bubbles to the surface of the water. All it takes is a small spark to ignite it (in a very controlled burn), and that heat keeps it lit. Then, all they have to do is stop the gas flow to remove the fuel, and voila, it stops.

I've noticed more gas is used when the river is initially lit - the 2nd time right after the mark twain passes is not as dramatic.

well, I think that's because the Twain stands a remote chance of being burned otherwise. I've seen that fire come very close to the Twain before!

almost every show the fire ignites directly next to the twain, they do a very good job of controling the flames.
