We are loving out time at DLR and CA, and my logistics husband is curious about what makes the trains at Screaming launch so quickly? He can't see a motor/wheel mechanism. Anyone know what makes it take off so quickly?
DD (8) went for the first time yesterday and LOVED it! DS got to go yesterday (almost 6), but couldn't get on today. He's very close to the height requirement, and yesterday was tall enough, but not today. Sad boy. I'm planning on a trip report later - but have so far loved the Disney Visa Meet n Greet and lots of rides. Also, we lucked out on Ariels PS by calling Sunday afternoon and getting a time for Monday. So, saw lots of princesses there, which make life happier for autograph seekers. Advice to not give up was well given! Thanks!

ps - anyone know what the long line close to CA was at closing time tonight? We left DLR at 8 or so, and there was a looooong line, going East, closer to CA.....any ideas?

It uses Linear Motors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_motor), essentially magnetic pulses that pull the train.

Wow! Thanks a ton, Bytebear! You are amazing and fast. This board is so awesome. I can't tell you all how many times in the last 2 days that we've been here, I've mentioned some fact I've gleaned, and my DH just says "how do you know that? Oh, yeah, Mouse Planet". Hooray!

Glad to help. Have fun, and I hope your son grows a quarter inch tonight.

The line was for "Minnie's Moonlight Madness" - an after-hours Cast Member scavenger/puzzle game.

My hubby is a mechanic and he can stand there FOREVER just watching the cars take off. I can see the wheels turning and the fingers itching to see "how it works" i.e. take it apart. He understands the magnetic function but you can just see the desire to really get in to it. He's the same way with the animatronics.
We all find our own magic at Disneyland.

Wait a sec... I thought pixie dust made everything in Disneyland go....
:consulting book:
Yup... right here "pixie dust runs everything and anything at Disneyland. Imagineers found it more effective and reliable than hydraulics and electronics."
Phew. ;)

Hmmm. I think maybe you missed an asterisk somewhere... pixie dust runs all of the Disneyland attractions -- but some of the DCA attractions are powered by magnets.
Then again, maybe the magnets get their energy from pixie dust.... so you may be right after all. ;)

oops... you are right! There's a footnote:
"The exception to this rule is that some of the DCA attractions do not run on Pixie Dust, but rather a combo of churro sugar and magnets."
Thanks for checking on that shna. ;)

"...and such magnets are in turn powered by either source A) Pixie Dust, or in some cases B) Churro Sugar"

This is so cool how it works, my son figures this is how they will get cars to fly :p

Disney Magic? Actually, I don't have a clue, but I do have an amusing story. The first time my husband and I rode Screaming we hadn't been watching the cars and were totally unprepared when it stopped. My husband commented "they must be stopping the ride so that a disabled person can get on". I had just enough time to say "I don't think they do that on roller coasters", when we took off. Wheeeeeeeeeee!!! I love that ride. And that man. <g>

Actually, DL and DCA are both completely run by pixie dust, Team Disney Anaheim is run by magnets. :p
