Hey all, I have a trip planned to DL in early June, what I was wondering is, is it feasible to visit Vegas for a few days while in the area? Or is it such a pain that you wouldn't even bother?

Our initial plan was to just go to DL on our 5 day pass and have one day at Knotts. If we decide to go to Vegas, we are going to cancel going to Knotts and likely add another day to our overall trip.

We will have a rental car and will have driven it from Portland. Do you think it is a wise decision to go to DL for the first 3 days, drive over to Vegas either in the evening or early in the morning (depending upon your advice) and stay at least one night there in a hotel and perhaps 2 nights. I had first considered just going for one night, spending the whole next day there and then driving back to Anaheim in the evening. At which point we will have 2 days left to visit Disneyland.

My other option would be to go all 5 days to DL, then drive to Vegas, stay a couple nights there then head back up to Oregon. Would it be wiser to leave straight from Vegas or is it a better route from LA?

Sorry so many questions but you all have been most helpful in other dillemas I have posted.

Thanks kindly and have a magical day!

We are staying in Anahiem from July 17-23 and then head up to Vegas from the 23-25 and then we head on home. For us its easier to do Vegas last because it is on our way home, staight up I15 to Canada.

Driving to Vegas, from southern california, depends mainly on which day you're driving up. Avoid driving on friday afternoon/evening up to vegas, or back down on a sunday night. You will get caught up in a nightmare of bumper to bumper traffic the entire way.

HI There! I live in Henderson, NV and I will tell you that I agree with Shinku, don't drive on Friday!! But being that it is in early June, you may want to consider that the highways will be busy because of graduations and such. Plus coming back, you may hit the traffic because all those graduates are heading for DL for grad night. Just drive anyday between Monday and Thursday, early afternoon or early night and you should be just fine!!! Have a great trip!!

can I just ell you that the drive from Oregon to Veags and vice versa SUCKS! LOL. We did it once and OMG is it flat and boring. I was seeing things and making up stories. It took 2 days. We came form Portland, so went through Sac and tahoe to REno, slept there, then to Vegas.

So my advice is to goto Vegas, then back to DL so you can just drive up the 5!

I would recommend at least 2 days to see Vegas. Like mentioned earlier weekdays would be fine. I wouldn't even attempt a weekend except for Sunday which isn't bad (Traffic will be headed back to L.A.) And room rates will be Much cheaper!

If you go, be sure to stop off at the Character Warehouse Store (Disney Outlet) at the "Fashion Outlets Las Vegas" A beautiful indoor mall, just as you arrive at the Nevada border in Primm. (Exit 1) It's Right off the freeway as you hit Nevada.

That's not at Primm. That's in Vegas. Exit at Blue Diamond, hang a right, hang a left at Las Vegas Blvd (the strip) and go down a few blocks, it'll be on your right hand side.

Shinku, Those outlets off the Blue Diamond exit are the "Las Vegas Outlet Center" (Formerly Belz) Just South of McCarran Airport. I've been to the Disney Outlet in Primm. It is now a permanent store and located just across the border. 48 miles South of Vegas (The Fashion Outlets, Las Vegas off Exit 1) There is also a Buffallo Bill's Resort Casino with the tall roller coaster !

Confusing is the fact there are 3 outlets in or near Vegas.
Las Vegas Premium Outlets (North Vegas)
Las Vegas Outlet Center (Near the Airport) The one you mentioned
Fashion Outlets, Las Vegas (Primm)

Off topic, but that rollercoaster (Desperado?) at Buffalo Bill's is the scariest ride I've EVER been on. I couldn't talk for three days after I rode it because I was so hoarse from screaming! It was either scream or go crazy! :)

We go to the Character Warehouse off of Blue Diamond quite often and there is a Disney Store Outlet at the Las Vegas Premium OUtlets which are near downtown Las Vegas. Are you saying there is a Disney Character Warehouse in Primm also?

I second that one! It isn't so much that it is an intense ride, but going up the lift, you can feel the track swaying in the wind. Then you start thinking about the lack of safety laws in Nevada...

They also have a ride similar to the Maliboomer, but it rises slowly rather than a big thrust. I hate those rides, so I was watching from below. As it was slowly ascending, a big metal clamp falls to the ground with a loud clang. The operator was wise enough to lower the ride slowly and no one was injured, but it really freaked out our party.

The AMS-liquidation.com site only lists the location at blue diamond. If I am mistaken, I apologize.

Strangely, wouldn't they want to list it? Wouldn't you WANT people to go and know it's there? I was just in vegas a few weeks ago (driving) and never saw one bit of advertising for the one at Primm.

Shinku, You are right! Sorry. There was an outlet at Primm, but it's been a few years! It makes sense they would put it in Vegas closer to the Locals and Tourists as well. My mistake! The website at Primm has no listing of it!

Sorry to semi hijack this Thread! Anyways there is a killer coaster at Buffallo Bill's. Yes it is the Desperado! There is also Bonnie and Clydes bullet riddled Death Car, and Clydes bloodstained shirt at Primm. OOoo so much fun!

I'm a Vegas frequenter. It's a really easy drive and it goes quick. Travel time is about 4 hours, I can usually do it in about 3 1/2 (NOTE: I don't encourage this, but 80mph is cruising speed on the way to Vegas. Stay to the right, a lot of people do 90+ on that freeway).

We usually leave first thing AM, stop for a break in Barstow or Baker and you're in Vegas for lunch. If you want to go on a weekend, leave Saturday morning and return Monday morning. Give yourself at least 2 nights in Vegas.

As for hotels, I've stayed in Paris, Ballys, TI, Venetian, Horseshoe, and Luxor. Any of the first 3 are my preferred.

Be sure to see a cirque show. Mystere is a great first-timer, and it's the cheapest of all of them. Get the best seats you can. We've seen all the Cirque Shows in Vegas (except LOVE) and we've been within the first 6 rows for all of them. It is REALLY worth the extra cost. (Warning, you may get picked on).

You can usually get a good deal if you see mystere and stay at TI (in the same hotel).

This is our third year in a row now, driving from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Anaheim. Although DLR is our ultimate destination, a night or two or three in Vegas is a definate part of our trips now. More 'adult' oriented, but it you plan properly, there is still a lot for the kids to do too. Research your hotels, many of them now have an arcade area or something where the kids can spend some time if you want to try your hand at adult games. Your first visit may be overwhelming, but you get used to it more each time you stay. PM me if you have any questions that I might be able to help with!

Thank you all for your advice! I think we will try to avoid going on Friday. We will likely try to go on Thursday morning and head back to Anaheim on Saturday.

I see our OP is not going on a Saturday, but I wanted to add a helpful hint here. Although not always so, many of the Strip hotels do not allow Saturday night check-ins. (They want us So-Cal folks to stay the whole weekend!)

If you are a regular guest of the hotel, this requirement is sometimes waived. However, for the infrequent visitor, be prepare to pay higher prices for the privilege of checking in on Saturdays if the hotel does allow it.

You'll be glad you did! There is sooooo much to see and do! Don't forget to wear comfy shoes....although one hotel might be 'beside' the next, it could be over a mile from one front door to the next! Have Fun!!!!

I was going to suggest going to Las Vegas Saturday and Sunday to miss some of the weekend crowd at Disneyland but I see you have already made you plans. That is what we did several years ago. We saw a magic show, a comedy show, the Tournament of Kings show and the Star Trek Experience. All were fantastic and well worth taking the extra drive.

There are literally hundreds of free things to do and see in Vegas. Go to http://www.vegasfreebie.com/ for a list of fun things to do. I recommend the forum shops at Caesar's Palace (especially the FAO Shwartz toy store for the kids).

If you are even a little bit of a Star Trek fan, I would do the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton. it's not free but worth the cost. I would skip the Borg Experience if you have smaller kids, cuz it's kinda scary.

There are several roller coasters around town, and one on the way to Vegas in Primm. The NY/NY is painfully rough.

If you feel the need to do a buffet, I highly recommend the Mandaly Bay buffet for lunch (Dinner is good too, although expensive). Lunch I think was about $18 including drinks. When you're done, you can head over to the shark tank.
