Don Edgren, problem-solver for Disney's parks and rides, dies at 83 -- MercuryNews/AP (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/16524260.htm), 2007-01-24

Don Edgren, an engineer who led a team building the first Space Mountain and had a role in building various Disney parks, has died. He was 83. Edgren died of a hemorrhagic stroke Dec. 28 in Eugene, Ore., his daughter, Kathlee Partee, told the Los Angeles Times. The Murrieta resident had been visiting relatives.

Mr. Edgren's 33 years of Disney problem-solving began in 1954, when the engineering firm he worked for was hired to help prepare Disneyland for its opening the next year. Mr. Edgren was then hired by Disney in 1961, said Marty Sklar, an executive vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering. Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean was already being built as a walk-through attraction when Walt Disney decided to transform it into a boat ride, to open in 1967. Mr. Edgren and his engineering crew had to figure out a way to take the expanded ride deeper underground.
