More than 100,000 lose power as winds hit Southern California (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/01/05/state/n150715S54.DTL&feed=rss.news) -- SFGate/AP, 2007-01-05

A strong Pacific cold front moved across Southern California on Friday, scouring the region with powerful winds that downed power lines while snow and ice interrupted traffic on a major interstate in a mountain pass north of Los Angeles.

Residents awakened to toppled trees and downed branches. Fronds torn off the crowns of palms littered parts of Sunset Boulevard, stacked several feet high in some places. At least 140,000 electrical customers in Los Angeles, coastal suburbs and inland cities to the east experienced outages of various lengths after the winds arrived in the early morning hours, and about 36,000 remained blacked out at midafternoon, utilities spokespersons said.
