Does anyone know the particular details of this coming attraction? Will it be an experience similar to its predecessor, in terms of looking through portholes and seeing things? They list the opening date of summer 2007? I'll be at the park the first week of June, and hoping that it will be opened by then....

I am sure others know more than me, but what I do know is that they are using the same subs as the old Submarine Voyage. They are also adding an underwater viewing area for the disabled who cannot ride. I believe they are using some sort of video screen overlay in the portholes to add animation to the scene, but I could be wrong.

My understanding is that it will be 3-D in some way, but they seem to be keeping a lot of info under wraps.

This is what I can tell you from my first hand observations:
SPOILERS
The subs will be using electric motors, which will be fed by using an electric current under water on the track, they won't be diesel anymore.
The subs will likely have A/C and heaters, I thought I saw a/c ducts being built inside of the subs last summer.
There will be video projectors that will flash images into your eyes through the port holes, the port holes will still be glass.
There will be plastic boxes under water, with robotic fish and other figures from the movie, when looking at these boxes from the submarine, it will appear they will be in the water.
There will be some scary effects inside of the sub, a volcanic explosion will rock the sub violently and scare small children.
All of the coral reef effects which are being painted now, are using recycled glass, mixed with paint, this will have a realistic look under water.
The subs have been renamed, one of the subs is named: Jeb, I have no idea where these names have come from.
Oh course, last but not least, the "mine" sea guls will be taking up residence in the lagoon and will be quite vocal.
Well this should be a wonderful attraction, just the line to get on the subs will be immense. You should expect So Cal. A/P's to be blocked out when the subs open, if you look at the Disneyalnd.Com a/p calendar, there is a huge chunk of time next summer when So Cal A/P's are blocked, this is the time when the subs will re-open, so block out tickets will be required.
Well that's what I know so far, there should be some amazing things going on in that submarine lagoon this summer.

correction, the name I photographed on the side of the submarine is Neb, not Jeb, anyway, I have no idea why you name a submarine Neb., I am thinking maybe Nebraska, but possibly it is neptune, which was one of subs that changed it's name in the 1980's. Lets hope it turns out to be Neptune.

There was a character called Neb in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was a huge influence on the original submarine ride, so perhaps it's a reference to that.

Yes that would make sense then to have a submarine named Neb after 20,000 Leagues, or maybe a new character will be in the ride named Neb. I will try to get more photos this week, but they keep the curtain where the subs are closed tight now.

I hope a Mouse Padder is around with a camera when they're filling this thing up!

I think its going to be several months before the sub lagoon is ready to be filled up. From what I understand, the sub lagoon requires over a million gallons of water to be completely full, so there should be plenty of photo opportunities to see it being filled back up.
The sub lagoon was filled back in April, and here are a few shots from that event, the subs are still sitting in the same position at the dock with the water drained, the subs have now been repainted and many upgrades to its original systems have been completed:

Kirk Douglas played NED (not "Neb") LAND in the movie.

You might want to do a little more research.

According to IMDb.com, there is a character called NEB, played by Leviticus Jones in the 1916 version. The character of Ned Land is played by Curtis Benson in that version, so they are two completely different characters. You are apparently referring to the 1954 version, which does not have a "Neb" in the cast list at all. Amazon.com also confirms that these are two completely different characters in the 1916 version.

A few more photos from today, another sub was partially visible, but I could only see it's name as being "M"

Is it just me or does this freak you out a little? I don't know if I want things "flashed into my eyes"

According to my brother, they are testing this in Florida, people see different things in the ride, that others don't see, the computer flashes different images at people's eyes.

agreed the flashing thing is creepy... but if it works out the way it seems they want it to... could be very, very cool

How do you suppose Disney executives will incorporate a PIRATE theme into the new NEMO ride? (A la Tom Sawyer's Island's recent review and potential upgrade?)

... port holes ...
... sunken treasure ...
... fishes which look human, or humans which look like fishes ...

It won't be long, now!

I can't believe they are still working on this. Was there in June 05 and they were working it then.

It should be good when it's done.

I personaly won't be going on it, if they keep the subs the same way, because i am Claustrophobic in the last few years ( was on it in WDW 21 yrs ago)

I'm mildly to moderately claustrophobic as well (I don't know how bad yours is). I find that getting into the sub is the hardest part for me. Going through the hatch is the very worst. But once I'm in and seated, I just keep my gaze focused out of the porthole and I'm okay.

I wish i was like that lol..

Going into the TIKI Room, I have to sit on the end of an isle or I can't do it!!

I can't go to the dentist because they have me on my back and people are all around me :crying: Can't idle at a train crossing because I cant get out if I wanted to.

My dh and kids will go on it and they can tell me how it is lol

Wow, that is bad! That's a shame. Too bad they don't have a pill for that like they do for motion sickness. I wish they had an anti-fear-of-heights pill so I could enjoy rides like Soarin' and the Maliboomer.

Sorry, but this in incorrect. The technology doesn't exist where images are projected directly into your eyes. The projected image has to have something to hit in order to focus. If they aimed the projectors at the sub's windows, it would appear that something is on the sub windows, not out in the water. From what I understand there are plexiglass sheets out there that the projectors are aimed at, and it's there that you'll see the image.

They used to have a "3-D" videogame like that, with "holographic" characters projected onto an invisible sheet of plastic or glass. It was really, really cool; much better than it sounds like it would be.
