How about - Soon to die of morbid obesity just like Yam and Marshmallow did last year. Why are they doing this again? :(

I wish I knew the sex of the two birds.

If they were a "couple", then I could go for:
• Carrie and Mr. Big
• Tom and Katie
• Ben and Jen
• Whitney and Bobby
• Britney and K-Fed
• Clark and Lana
*****
Say! I already see a turkey theme in those names!

• Tom (i.e., male turkey)
• Mr. Big (i.e., 25 pounds or more)
• K-Fed (i.e., fed a family of 6)
*****
I suppose we should stick to traditional names.
What is traditional?
• Cranberry and Gravy
• Leg and Thigh
• Tryptophan and Glaze
****
Me?
I live near Hollywood. I'm naming my birds after the "biggest" TV stars of the 1980s.
I'm naming my two turkeys:
• Kirstie and Delta

:) :) :)

I agree.

Though if we have to have the Presidentially Pardoned Turkeys, I vote for Rove and Rumsfeld: a pair of turkeys sure to receive pardons sooner or later.

I can't believe Disneyland is going to participate in this event again. Where is PETA when you need them, last year they stuck a Turkey in a plastic bowl, and marched it down mainstreet. The poor bird was so scared and was in shock the whole time. My message to the White House about the Turkeys:
Mr. Bush, please put those turkeys on a nice secluded farm with many acres to roam, please don't put them in a small pen at Disneyland, where children will tease them all day. My bet is that these turkeys won't last six months after they arrive at Disneyland. :(

What about "White Meat" and "Dark Meat"??

On BBC America's show, "Gordon Ramsey's The "F" Word" ("F" stands for FOOD, not the other word!), he has shown his family is raising several turkeys for their family holiday dinner and has involved his small kids in taking care of them, before they are done away with that is. He named his birds after famous chefs! Like Jamie, Anthony & some others I don't recognize the first name of.

My cousin who owns a farm tells me that you never, ever name them. He tells of the first time they got some cows to raise for food. They had the cows butchered and when they sat down to eat, no one could touch it.

He owns a dairy farm by the way, in case you are confused as to why he hadn't raised his own food before.

My cousin who owns a farm tells me that you never, ever name them [...]

I am told that 4-H kids have no problems with raising their calfs to be slaughtered.

But I would not have the heart to be a 4-H'er and know that my "Fluffy" or my "Spot" was to be sold by the pound in a beef auction.
:crying:

I once had a triceratops named "Tiny".
:)
We decided to keep him once he learned to fetch.

These Turkeys are raised to grow fast, and so they die fast. I don't know that they would do any better on a farm. But I bet they would be happier! I agree, however. They really have no business being at Disneyland (or caged up anywhere).

Let's pardon them, then lock 'em up! Gee, that makes since!!

Neck and Neck / Voters go to the polls to name a turkey for the second time this month. (http://www.slate.com/id/2154351/?nav=fix#FedandUp) -- Bruce Reed/Slate Magazine, 2006-11-21

Every Thanksgiving, the president actually pardons two turkeys – the official Thanksgiving Turkey, who poses for the cameras in the Rose Garden, as well as an alternate, who remains in an undisclosed secure location, ready to take over if the Thanksgiving Turkey is eaten by terrorists. The two turkeys then retire to the Elysian Fields of Disneyland, where they will serve as Grand Marshals for Disney's Thanksgiving Day parade, and be free to volunteer as mascots for California congressman Duncan Hunter's 2008 presidential campaign (http://www.duncanhunter2008.com/).
...
Judging from the few open threads on the issue, the White House would have been better off entering the joke President Bush makes every year about the closeness of the race: Neck and Neck. If voters could write in, their choices would probably be None and Of the Above. MousePlanet (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?t=63064) shows the deep, unmet desire for Food nominees: Get In and My Belly, Lunch and Dinner, White Meat and Dark Meat.

Disneyland Resort Press Release

Disneyland Makes "Thanksgiving Dreams Come True” For National Thanksgiving Turkey… and Some Lucky Holiday Travelers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Nov. 22, 2006) - - It’s truly a “Thanksgiving Dream Come True” for the National Thanksgiving Turkey. Following today’s traditional Presidential pardon of the National Thanksgiving Turkey in the White House Rose Garden, Flyer and his alternate Fryer will be rushed by police escort to Dulles International Airport. Upon arrival, the birds will “fly” First-Class on United Airlines Flight Turkey-1 to their new home at Disneyland.

In addition to the turkeys having their “Thanksgiving Dreams Come True,” every passenger and crew member on United Flight Flyer is in for a special surprise. In celebration of Disney Parks “Year of a Million Dreams,” everyone on board will be greeted by Mickey Mouse and given a ticket to Disneyland—the place where dreams come true.

The trip from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles will mark the second consecutive year that the National Thanksgiving Turkey has celebrated his pardon at Disneyland. Accompanied by National Turkey Federation Chairman Mike Briggs, Flyer, a 20-week-old, 36-pound tom turkey, will be the grand marshal in a special Thanksgiving Day parade down Main Street U.S.A. Following the parade, Flyer his alternate Fryer will find a home at Santa’s Reindeer Round-Up at Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland, where they’ll remain throughout the holidays and the rest of their lives.

“It is a true honor and once-in-a-lifetime experience for my family and me to represent our industry at the White House during the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation,” said Briggs. “This event plays such an important role in what is a uniquely American holiday, and the turkey industry is very proud to be associated with both. Having the opportunity for the National Thanksgiving Turkey to be invited again to participate in the Disneyland parade is a wonderful bonus,” Briggs added.

U.S. President Harry S. Truman was the first Commander-in-Chief to be presented with a Thanksgiving turkey (in 1947) by the National Turkey Federation. This year’s presentation marks the 59th anniversary of a tradition that has continued through 10 successive White House administrations. The 2006 National Thanksgiving Turkey was raised on a farm outside Springfield, Missouri.

The National Turkey Federation is the advocate for all segments of the U.S. turkey industry, providing services and conducting activities, which increase demand for its members’ products and protect and enhance the ability to effectively and profitably provide wholesome, high quality, nutritious turkey products.

That's great that our thread made it in the article! Wootah!

Sure. :) I can't wait for the press conference!

• The first thing they will say is, "Boy, oh boy. We just flew in from Washington. And, man, are our arms tired!"

• The reporter from the Orange County Register will ask, "You've been here a while now. How do you find Disneyland?" at which one turkey will reply, "Turn left at Greenland."

• A reporter not familiar with turkey anatomy will ask, "What do you call that red dangley thing drooping from beneath your neck?" and the turkey will reply, "I call it Arthur."

Scroog-y comment ahead:
It was very nice of President Bush to pardon the two birds. It's unfortunate that he couldn't apply similar compassion to the record-shattering 152 executions he presided over during his term as governor of Texas. Ceremonially pardon a genetic-freak turkey? Sure. Spend more than ten minutes pondering whether to pardon or even commute the execution of a mentally retarded inmate? Nah.

I Heart Disneyland!
