I was at The Park on the Fourth of July (quick errand, get in, get out) and I noticed that the Excursion train/Holiday Three/Number 300/The People-eater (Has a lot of names, doesn't it?) has a new skirting on the left, non-entrance side.

I was on that same train June 25 and it wasn't there.

Anybody have an exact date for the installation?

Those side panels were installed in early to mid-June, 2006. You might not have noticed them if you were looking for them.

Some feel they are un-necessary, and a detriment to "show," but others feel they look OK, and are good for safety reasons.

The fact that you didn't notice them after they were installed makes me think they're not too objectionable.

I like these new panels. They painted them beautifully, and it makes the cars look more solid, and more regal. The versions at WDW, as seen in the pics, didn't turn out so good because the installation was so poorly done and there are bright metal bolts and screws visible on the painted panels.

But the Disneyland version looks very nice.

Problem is, those cars were designed by Bob Gurr, with Roger Broggie's assistance, to reflect a very specific, real-life prototype car actually used on real railroads. The new side panels detract from the historical accuracy they were so lovingly designed with.
