It's the opening of the park at the end of Main Street. You are allowed in the gate 1/2 hour before rope drop to meander through the shops, have coffee, etc. There is an actual velvet rope across that end of Main Street.

Now that there is early entry, rope drop has discontinued on Saturdays, right? So are they still doing rope drop on other days? I've been wondering this for months. Got up early on a Saturday a few months ago to see it, and we weren't let in until the official opening time. Any info would be appreciated!

Rope still continues on weekends. I know, I was there. And Early Entry is also used on weekdays, and they still do Rope Drop. People with Early Entry tickets may pass the rope and go into Fantasyland, but the rest of the people must wait. And velvet rope? Hardly. The rope is the same rope you can find in outsied queues, like Pirates of the Caribbean's, and also the type of rope you find along the parade route when Cast Members allow guests to cross.
