But what a drop of the Disney owned hotels, especially the Disneyland Hotel, from 6th to 12th, and becoming the lowest rated Disney owned hotel...

Congrats to both the Candy Cane Inn and the Howard Johnson's for being named a Traveller Choice!!!:fez:

How did Ramada Inn Maingate get #23 over the Annabella #32  ? The RIMG was awful and the Annabella was wonderful. I would like to know how they got those ratings.

Let me quote TripAdvisor.com

>>** Update January 2006 - Enhanced Popularity Index launched **

TripAdvisor is proud to unveil a new and improved Popularity Index. In the spirit of continual improvement, we have listened to you and have directly incorporated your feedback into development of our new Popularity Index. Although we can't give away all of the "secret sauce" that goes into the rankings, the index is even better aligned with traveler satisfaction and is "smarter" when evaluating recent information.

Interesting to see that HoJo's is number 1 in the Top Ten Family hotels, and CCI is number 7, but CCI is rated #1, and HoJo's number #2 in the Anaheim ratings....

TripAdvisor Press Release

TripAdvisor Announces 2005 Travelers' Choice Award Winners

Best Hotels Selected by Millions of Travelers Around the World for Luxury, Value, Families, Pool and More

NEEDHAM, Mass., Jan. 18 -- TripAdvisor, the largest global travel information and advice destination on the web, today announced its 2005 Travelers' Choice award winners. The 2005 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice awards recognized the best hotels in the following categories: Best Luxury, Best Hidden Gem, Best Bargain, Best for Families and Best Pool.

"This year's winners stand out for their excellence in service," said Michele Perry, spokesperson for TripAdvisor. "Because real travelers are making the selections, Travelers' Choice winners are not necessarily the 'in' places for the rich and famous but rather the hotels that make the average traveler feel rich and famous. This year's winners feature something for everyone, from bargain to luxury hotels in major cities to extraordinary finds in off-the-beaten-path places around the world."

Remaining faithful to its promise to provide the whole truth about travel, the good the bad and the ugly, TripAdvisor also identified the 10 "dirtiest" hotels in the U.S. based on traveler ratings for cleanliness. Five of the ten dirtiest hotels are in the Big Apple, and the overall dirtiest, according to TripAdvisor travelers, is New York City's Hotel Carter.

To view the complete list of Travelers' Choice winners or to check out the top luxury hotels in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Orlando or Las Vegas, contact Brooke Ferencsik at brooke@tripadvisor.com (brooke@tripadvisor.com) or visit http://www.tripadvisor.com/ (http://www.tripadvisor.com/).

The TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice award winners for 2005 were determined by a combination of TripAdvisor's Popularity Index and traveler ratings of specific attributes. TripAdvisor's Popularity Index is a proprietary algorithm that determines traveler satisfaction based on a variety of sources, including TripAdvisor hotel reviews and travel articles and opinions from across the web. TripAdvisor recently added ratings to the hotel review process, allowing travelers to "grade" hotels based on a variety of attributes, including cleanliness, value and suitability for specific types of travelers.

I'm not surprised to see this at all. In fact, we've been in a real quandry regarding the Readers Choice Awards for 2005 because we only had two hotels earn the minimum rating of 4.5 Planets required to qualify for the award in previous years. The overall score for the Howard Johnsons hotel, which won the category in both 2003 and 2004, dropped from 4.6 Planets to 4.0 Planets, and their 2005 reviews averaged just 2.8 Planets.

Likewise, the Disneyland Hotel, which had earned second place in 2004, dropped from an overall score of 4.6 Planets to 4.3 Planets, and their 2005 average was 3.9 Planets.

For the Disneyland Area, the only two hotels to earn 4.5 Planets or higher were:

Homewood Suites by Hilton: 4.6 Planets, but only 2 reviews in 2005

Candy Cane Inn: 4.5 Planets, up from an average of 4.1 Planets at the end of 2004. The CCI had 11 reviews in 2005, ALL 5 Planets.

The rate was good, but I didn't see much to get all crazy over.

yeah, me too. i stayed at hojos in late november/early december and it was not all that i remembered it to be. first off the room i had booked was not available so they put in a room that was so noisy i couldn't hear myself think, so i asked to be transferred and they moved me back away from the freeway, but it still wasn't that impressive. the bed was very hard so i had trouble sleeping, and the bathroom was a bit grotty. the service was friendly, and helpful, but after staying at the DLH for the first half of my stay (on those wonderful AP rates) I am now a bit spoilt I think, and hojos no longer does it for me!

You can't expect so much when you pay so little. Howard Johnson's is a budget hotel and is basically a place to sleep.

Isn't it funny how different we all are.......I've stayed at 6 of the hotels on the list and that wouldn't be how I would rate them either. Guess it's good they have all different kind so there is something that makes each of us happy. While I think HOJO's is a nice place, I wouldn't go so far as rating it higher than DLH or Grand? I guess the results differ based on who responds to or gives hotels ratings.

Well, one thing I've noticed about the resort hotels is that many rate the value of the hotels very low. I'm sure if prices per night were lower, they might raise.
Paradise Pier- $125 a night maybe?
Disneyland Hotel- $150 a night?
Californian- $225 a night?
No question about it though, they are overpriced.:)

Maybe not if you rate the hotels as such. If you rate them when you compare value for your money, it could be it ends up this way. I don't know, I have never stayed at any of them.

I know I have paid a lot of money for luxury hotels, but wasn't too impressed, whereas I would rate budget hotels a lot better. Where they nicer than the luxury hotels? No, not if you compare them just like that, but when you compare what you get for your money... I ended up rating the budget hotels higher.

It is good to see the PP in the top 10, I think it has always deserved to be there and readers on this forum seem to agree also for the mostpart.

But I am still shocked to see the Grand Californian so high. I just do not get the attraction to the hotel. Maybe its me, but I am not crazy about the theme and I am REALLY not crazy about the price! I get the same level of service from the DLH and the PP.

It doesnt mean that it is a better hotel, its just better at meeting the expectations of the guests. At a lower price you are going to have lower expectations, its not going to be as hard to meet or exceed them. For the rates the Grand charges one would expect a LOT from the hotel.

Well, I was very happy with my rack rate stay at the Marriott hotel during christmas, lots of great little touches like a balloon guy (very talented) at breakfast, a great buffet and my kid got to eat free, Santa in the evening, with pictures and hot chocolate, and a very nice room with a very comfortable bed (fancy linens even). Usually we stay at the Hyatt Regency, with priceline rates (never paid more than $65, have paid as little as $40) and been very happy. Pay for parking, but at that rate, who cares? I don't see the appeal of the cheaper places when I can get a nicer room at priceline rates that are comparable to the motel prices.

In a word- LOCATION. I want to be as close as possible. I want to be able to walk a couple minutes and be there. I don't go there to see Santa or a balloon guy at breakfast. Nice touchs? Yes, but not what I go for.
