Surely, someone has posted a good source to learn how the MONORAIL works.
(What makes it start and stop? Can it go backwards?)

Please post a pointer for me, to the appropriate thread or article.

Thank you.

I anticipate that the moderator may move my thread to a more appropriate Mouse Pad (e.g., technology? business of magic?)

(Why am I asking? I wonder why "light rail" is often mentioned by city councils and county board of supervisors as a good thing, as if "heavy rail" or "monorail" is bad. -- Thus, the moderator may move my thread away from a DLR-related Mouse Pad. My interest in the HOW STUFF WORKS area, not the ISN"T IT FUN/NIFTY area.)

www.monorails.org has a lot of information about monrails including the different types in different countries/cites and how they go/stop/reverse.

Hope this helps!

A LOT of it has to do with costs, it is a lot cheaper to build on the ground, then to build the track above ground.

The current "trendy" thing is special busways (roads and/or lanes) just for buses, LA just opened one up today, and San Diego (which already has a major light rail system in the trolley) is looking at busways to expand the trolley system, instead of more trains.

Great website MarkVI, I wasn't aware there were that many monorails running in the states.

I know that our monorail system here in Seattle is two separate tracks that run parallel to each other. There is one car on each track and each car has a driver compartment in the front and back. The cars run backwards and forwards on their respective track.

I haven't been on in it years...it's more of a tourist attraction! :) Strangely enough, I think I've been on the Disneyland monorail more than the Seattle one!

DocKrock wrote this article (http://www.mouseplanet.com/kkrock/dockrock-1.htm) regarding how the monorail works. I found it very informative.

I've gone on four of the listed North American ones :D Had a chance for five, but turned it down because it didn't look too safe to me. (Magic Mountain)

And for more on monorails, don't forget George McGinnis' excellent stories about the Mark V (Disneyland) (http://www.mouseplanet.com/mark/mg040114.htm) and Mark VI (WDW) (http://www.mouseplanet.com/mark/mg040130gm.htm) monorails.
