Can you hold a fastpass for a ride at Disneyland and California Adventure at the same time? Thinking of something like heading to downtown disney for lunch and getting Indy Fastpass and jumping into CA on the way to get fast pass there and then riding both rides after lunch? Would this work?

Yes, you can do this. The machines are not networked between parks.

Would this work? Moreover, if you have a group you do not need that group to enter the other park in order to get FPs. For example, say everyone enters DL. Then everyone takes a break back to the hotel. One person from the group can enter DCA and get FPs for the whole group even though no one else entered DCA. This also works in reverse. Once you enter either DL or DCA, your tickets are initialized for FP at both parks at the same time. I used this on our August trip to pick up extra FPs - see http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?p=705449#post705449
