View Full Version : Space Mountain - frequent emergency stops?

Yesterday when we went on SM there were two emergency stops...during ONE ride! The first occured when a man in the rocket in front of us failed to pull down his lap bar in time for it to lock and then when checked by the CM before launch it wouldn't lock at all so our rocket was diverted onto the left track where we were unloaded and walked through backstage back to the loading platform. The CM immediately hit the stop button and so the ride had to be completely "rebooted" When they got it moving again we were put on a rocket and enjoyed our ride...until it stopped again. We were at the very end of the ride and the lights came on so we got to see the tunnel. Of course with my addiction I don't mind seeing backstage or how things work but it seems that we hit the jackpot of emergency stops on that ride yesterday.
By the way that man who didn't put down his lap bar was on our rocket during both stops...maybe he had magical powers ;)

Space can stop several times a day. There is a safety system in place that if there is not enough time in between rockets that it does a cascade stop which will stop all the rockets in the next brake zone available. Sometimes it can be because guest do not board fast enough and sometimes it can be because a rocket is very heavy and when it is heavy it goes faster and can catch up to close to the one in front of it.

The stops the first poster mentioned are Ride Cascase Stops. not Emergency Stops. An emergency stop would require you to exit the rocket and walk back to the station as opposed to them pushing you back in the rocket. The cast members can't initiate the stop. it happens because theres no more parking spots in the station. then to the above post, if a rocket is too heavy and it gets to close to the one in front, it does an Emergency stop, not a cascade stop.

They removed the rocket we were riding in from the main track and put a different one on the track before the ride was restarted. The second time the ride stoped because we were at the end of the ride. We were pushed back to the station. So I don't know what exactly was going on but it was strange to have this happen twice in five or so minutes.

very simple to explain... the first brake u come into when ur in the station... if that brake is occupied by a rocket and another one comes through the tunnel, the ride stops so the one through the tunnel doesn't hit the one in the last break.
