View Full Version : Bottlenecks

Of all the places in DL that tend to be crowded, some were obviously not designed with the huge crowds that now are an everyday part of the experience. A few places that come to mind: the "bottleneck" near the entrance to Indiana Jones/Bengal BBQ; the "bottleneck" near the entrance to Buzz Lightyear; and the "bottleneck" near Splash Mountain/Winnie the Pooh. Granted, some of the "bottlenecks" are caused by people who simply stop in the middle of their walking, which causes major traffic jams. I can't remember if it was posted here or not, but I once read that the "bottleneck" near Indiana Jones could be eliminated by tearing down that whole middle island of buildings, i.e., Riverbelle Terrace, Golden Horseshoe, Bengal BBQ, etc. However, that action would leave such a void that I don't look at that being a very positive idea. Someone once suggested "one-way" walking streets into Frontierland/Adventureland, i.e., as you're entering those areas, you go in on the right side (by the shooting arcades), but when you exit, you go out by the Tiki Room entrance. Oh well, just something to think about. :)

Adventureland's problem is also the trees (and now the mosiac) in the middle. Plus the guests hanging outside Indi deciding if they want to go in (I hate that) or waiting for people to come out. Plus you have people eating by Bengal BBQ and in line at Riverbelle AND the line for Jungle Cruise. Not to mention Tarzan's REALLY BIG Treehouse Trunk that takes up a lot of room... I don't think you have as congested an area like that anywhere else in the park.

the "bottleneck" near the entrance to Buzz Lightyear;

I can't remember where I read this, but I "heard" that they were planning on moving the rocket jets (or Astro Orbiter, if you like) back to its original home above the old Peoplemover platform, to alleviate the congestion in the entrance of Tomorrowland. I sure hope that ends up happening!

That's where I saw Astro Orbiter before. I knew there was "something" up there. We could never figure out how to get up there. And the People mover were those black cars that didn't seem to go very far, but would SHOOT around some of the corners pretty fast? What ever happened with those? Is the track still there?

I think it's funny how one mention of something, sparks a memory that I didn't even know was missing.

when approaching a bolltle neck area it's very importatnt that your group is trained to btreak apart get through it and meet back up on the other side. My daughter and I do this like pros. It's easier for one person to get through than to try and get a group trying to stay together through. :)...my mother says I bob and weave through crowds...well, yeah...I don't want to be in the crowd...LOL...one of my biggest pet peeves in vegas are people who just stand on moving sidewalks.....why don't they WALK!! they are there to get in the casinos faster.....that doesn't bother me as much in DL...when they are working....

This is why I don't care for ToonTown too much.... too many things to do that cause people to stop in the middle of the walkway!!! Who am I kidding, I hate it when people do that anywhere!! ;)

YES! I totaly agree with you. I don't understand people who are in a group of 10. 1 person has a stroller and when they stop, everyone stops. Casusing this huge check up of people. Ya know what also just irritates the heck outa me, when you're walking down main street, and the street is alreay crowded with people so you use the sidewalks, and theres a group of 7 people, walking side by side by side and they are basically crawling! Blocking the whole walk way. And I know they see us right behind them trying to get by. Then they give you that look like, whats your hurry? It's like when the first two cars at a red light decide to roll down their windows and have a conversation. the light turns green, theyre still talking. when you honk your horn, they get mad! Its like, this isnt a coffee house, its an intersection, pull off to side the side of the road and talk! And don't even get me started on those people you see walking towards you at an angle. You could be wlaking a straight line for 100 yards and off in the distance, to the left, some idiot is drifting towards you and you know that if YOU dont move, he'll plow right into you and make it seem like you are the one who cant walk! Urgh! I could go on but I'll stop. :)

Another thing that I think would help, mostly in the case of the Adventureland area, it to actually USE the queue INSIDE Indy. That area near the entrance and exit is always full of people, if they were to just clear it out, and make the fast pass and regular lines merge inside, that whole area could be freed up. That is what I noticed when I was there last week.

On a side note, I agree that groups that stop in the middle of the walkway are extremely frustrating!!!

Another side note: I have also noticed that FastPass does cause a lot of congestion in the walkways and in the lines. For instance, I was waiting in the standby line for Space Mountain and they were letting like 50-100 people in on the FastPass return line, then like 20 from the stand by. They should just cut their losses, and get rid of FastPass alltogether.

I'm with you on that, FP does create a lot of problems, especially outside Indy. Now I'm sorry, but you're right that queue is just too elaborate to have go to waste like that. Now granted, the outside portion is just as spectacular but I think it would be better if they moved the FP machines near the generator area where the outside queue now stands. Both fastpass and stand by can enter the temple and make the long journey down. When you enter the first temple room, just past the spike room, here is where the lines can split. There is more than enough queue line in both this room and the film room to hold much of the standby line. The film room has both the switchbacks and straight shoot. The straight shoot on the right can be used to FP while the rest of the switchbacks can go into standby. This way everyone gets the benefit of being able to admire the inside queue, and on hot days get out of the sun for one. If worse came to worse and they needed to break back the standby line on busier days, I don't see the problem with splitting the line in two sections through the spike room and caverns. They already do this in Splash mountain and to be honest, by splitting the line they really knocked a lot of space out of the line while youre standing. So if thats the argument at Indy, how can they get away with it in Splash? Just my thoughts.

They should also do something about Space Mountain's inside queue. There is such a long line area (in the air conditioning) that is so wasted. Part of the ride experience at Disneyland is the lines. They waste so much now.

The one around Buzz Lightyear/ Star Tours bugs me because people just stop and for some reason the temperture rises 10 to 20 degrees in it just based on the body heat alone.
