If I were to buy a 5 day park hopper at MWR for $121.50, how much would it cost me to upgrade the ticket to an AP? Would it be the difference between the discounted rate and the AP price or the difference between a regular five day pass and the AP price? Thanks!

Yes, the difference is always the price you PAID versus the current price for the AP you want.

The one big rule, you MUST get an AP that costs more than the cost of the ParkHopper you are using to upgrade.

How does DL know how much you paid for the ticket? Is it written on the ticket? Maybe there's a barcode??

well you pay the difference for the pass you want to get

Actually, it is part of the "number", some of the last digits are the price of the ticket.

Also, many tickets have the price printed on them.

Thanks Darkbeer, I figured you'd have the answer.

I can save a little bit of cash buying an AP at the base. A Deluxe is currently $195 and a premium $303.

I bought MWR 4-day hoppers for my trip in September. I paid $117 each and it says $117 on the back of my ticket, so they would know how much for sure.

Some of the MWR's I've bought tickets at before sold them for slightly higher (usually about $5 more) than the 'face value' (what is printed on them) of the tickets...this is their version of a service charge, but still far less than what you would pay anywhere else.

We have used these tickets in the past and then upgraded to an AP before they expired...we paid the difference of the AP and the 'face value'. For example, I buy a 5-day pass for $125 and the value printed (or encoded) on the ticket is $119. Sometime during my trip I decide to upgrade to a SoCal AP, which is currently $149. I would need to pay $30 ($149-$119) in order to do so, and the expiration date will date back to a year after the first date I used the 5-day pass, not the day I upgraded it.
