"As Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on Monday, experts said it could turn one of America's most charming cities into a vast cesspool tainted with toxic chemicals, human waste and even coffins released by floodwaters from the city's legendary cemeteries. " -----Associated Press

 :(

I wonder if Disneyland will do some sort of Memorial, or something in their New Orleans Square, to acknowledge the disaster that's occuring in the real one.

Apparently Disney's is all that's left of the French Quarter.

Sad.

According to CNN, the French Quarter is surprising everyone.
Neighborhoods outside the Vieux Carre were inundated with up to 15 feet of water. But the old city, built on the highest ground around, weathered the glancing blow from the Category 4 storm in grand style.

"....a giant stagnant pond contaminated with building debris, coffins, sewage and other hazardous materials."-----Associated Press

The French Quarter will feel the effects of that.

The water has absolutely nowhere to go. The giant levees that surround the city won't contain any of the runoff for long.

"Even if they hold, water will pour over their tops and begin filling the city as if it were a sinking canoe."----Associated Press

The water will rise even more.

I think of New Orleans as much more than the French Quarter, anyway. Disneyland's NOS isn't just Side Street, and Canal Street. It's the Rivers of America, ......

Maybe now is a good time to shut down Pirates----That, and the Haunted Mansion will have new meaning.

I don't know: everyone, what are your opinions?

Is it in bad taste to take pleasure from Haunted Mansion and Pirates, in light of what's happening, currently, in New Orleans?

This is silly. Of course it's OK to go have fun at Disney. It's too bad what is happening in the south, but life goes on. Who do you hurt by going on Pirates or the mansion?

Should we not ride mission space or space mountain because of the tragedies in the space program?

Should we not ride Tower of Terror if there is a real life elevator accident?

Come on. Stuff happens.

I'm not saying to cancel trips. I'm just asking if it will be awkward? I might not take all the pleasure, I usually do. Being in NOS might give me a little more pause, now, than usual.

I faced this question with my trip of a lifetime scheduled the day after the Tsunami. No way was I going to cancel my trip after 25 years of waiting. But, it was slightly bittersweet.

Has anyone been to NOS today? What's the mood like?

Shepher Smith on Fox News just reported that the water level is still rising in New Orleans (for unknown reasons) and is now up Canal Street and starting to creep into the French Quarter. Hopefully that is a trend that won't continue (or is a reporting error, as a lot of what is being said on the news is).

Now, the horrible part of my brain, in line with the OP of this thread. I was wondering yesterday if they'd take theming to the logical extreme at Port Orleans Riverside at Walt Disney World and make guests sleep on the roof. Today, seeing how many people really are trapped on their roofs (Smith also reports that the sheriff has called for all flat boats in New Orleans to gather at a specific point so that they can begin rescue operations or at least get water to the people on their roofs) I feel really bad about that.

I don't think Disney will put in any sort of memorial, nor should it.

NOS is a fantasy, not the reality of New Orleans, so I wouldn't really feel odd or strange visiting now.

As far as the water rising, since the levee was breeched, the water is most likely still rising because the pumps can't keep up with Lake Pontchartrain, which is flowing through the levee and into the city.

Your sentiments are noble, pisces.

Will you hate me if I tell you a secret? I'm thinking the French Market could make a special dessert.

They said the water didn't seem to be coming in over the surface. It appears that it is in coming in through the sewer/storm drain system due to pressure at other areas.

To be honest I hadn't thought about NOS in relation to New orleans. Not sure how I would feel visiting there today....but I don't feel that closing pirates or Haunted mansion is a good idea. Disneyland is an amusement park vs a museum...that would make it a different situation.

I saw that late last night on local Fox news. reporter from LA was on Bourbon street talking to an officer patrolling against looters (on a 24 hr shift) and you could see water bubbling up from cracks in the pavement. Yikes!

To me the DL NOS is supposed to show the spirit of the real NO, not a real life mirror of it.

City has fallen, and that's not an exaggeration. I've been around a long time, but I cannot remember when we've watched a city perish before our eyes.

New Orleans is under martial law. Every single resident, including everyone in the French Quarter has been told to evacuate, only they can't get out because the water is rising faster, blocking the exits.

Prisoners have taken over a prison. Power to the whole city will be shut down for at least a month, although probably longer.

A complete blackout...for a month or longer????

I would feel very strange standing in NOS , at least today, but I imagine for some time. Maybe the flags at NOS (are there flags?) should be flown at half mast.

There should be some Disney (NOS) acknowledgement of what is going on. IMHO IMHO IMHO

New Orleans Square isn't supposed to represent the New Orleans of now (thus they never added a Hustler's Club or live sex act shows) but a mythologized New Orleans of the past.

Considering that until recently the park didn't even lower the Town Square flag to half mast for any reason I wouldn't expect much in the way of tribute or acknowledgement in NOS.

Las Vegas's New York, New York Casino wasn't supposed to represent the New York of "now" either......the Casino never had a Twin Towers World Trade Center....

However, they put up a 9/11 memorial, anyway.

I think the plaque, as you go through the train tunnel says it all "Here we leave behind today.........". Disneyland is a place people go to forget about what is going on in the world. Its a place to be entertained. Its not a place where people go and expect a memorial for tragic events. JMHO.

And Disney is not MGM Mirage (the owners of New York New York). It would be interesting to know if New York New York would have created a memorial on their own. The initial memorial there was a spontaneous event and not something designed by the owners.

I wouldn't be bothered if Disney did something subtle but I'm not bothered if they don't. And I wouldn't be bothered to be in NOS today. But it is fine with me if it bothers you.

It's scarily apparent that maybe New Orleans Square will be the last remnant of what once was New Orleans.

We are, as it has been said before, watching a city disappear in front of our eyes.

It's heartbreaking and incredibly sad.

I understand how important the 50th is to them. However, is the 50th so precious that we have to ignore every single life event that comes along?

This is one of the most heartbreaking situations ever. The Red Cross is spending more on this than they did on 9/11.

But, Disneyland can't be bothered to do anything because (just like Christmas) it interferes with their 50th ???????

At this time, people need a place to take their grief.

QUESTION: If people want to lay flowers, wreaths, candles, etc....what do you think would be the best place in NOS to do that?

If the first statement is true, then I dont think anyone should take flowers, wreaths or candles to Disneyland, they should send their money to the red cross. Even if it is just a couple dollars it would be better spent at the red cross then for flowers that will get thrown away when Disney cleans the park at night.

Well, yeah, but overbearing Noo Yawkas demanding acknowledgement for the bestest city inna wurld are so commonplace that New York, New York was probably compelled to do something, anything, just to shut them up. Maybe the new ownership of Caesars Palace will be anemable to a memorial for the victims of the Punic Wars.

With luck, Disneyland is made of sterner stuff.

The worst natural disaster in the history of the U.S. ......An entire City leveled, but Disneyland can't/won't acknowledge it, because it cuts into their 50th celebration---- which must go on no matter what !!!
