Take a look at this comparison:

Take a look at the way Disneyland is flat on top in the 1955 pic, but it is rounded on top in the 1970 pic. Is it my imagination, or did they move the position of the railroad?

Looks like it was changed to go around what is now the Big Thunder Barbecue/Festival Arena area on the left and Videopolis/Fantasyland theater on the right. But those didn't go in until 1985/86 so I don't know why it would have changed by 1970.

Looks like the track would have had to change to accommodate "small world" in 1966.

Sure! Disneyland's "waistline," like most 50-year-olds', has expanded over time! Much of this expansion occured in the mid-1960s, as Alex noted, with the addition of several attractions and lands, such as New Orleans Square, Small World, and the Grand Canyon/Primeval World dioramas.

The track has widened so much that originally, Frontierland Train Station was situated very near what today is the entance to the Blue Bayou!

it's just my opinion, but the NOS expansion may have made the turn past the rivers of america to sharp? just my opinion though.

the picture from 1955 was taken from an airplane the one from 1970 looks like it was taken from a early spy satellite. the two pictures are not the same. the angle distance plant growth around the park. the 1955 photo was taken closer to the ground you could see more details. the one from 1970 was taken at a more distance sugesting that it was taken from a satellite

The 1970 photo is not taken from that high. It could easily be from a plane.

Anyway, any expansion would actually serve to broaden the curves, not tighten them. As the park has expanded, so has its railroad!

Both photos are taken from an airplane. The 1970 picture was taken from a higher altitude, and is in fact probably many photos that have been pieced together (whereas the 1955 photo is a single shot).

Most of the time when people think they're looking at "satelite photos" what they are really seeing is an aerial taken from a high altitude (often done by the USGS). True satelite photos rarely show much in the way of surface detail (they can get close enough in to make Disneyland recognizable, but not close enough to see individual cars).
