I am thinking of taking an excurision to Catalina Island, but it seems very expensive. I am not sure if it's "worth it" or not...Can anyone recommend a reasonable tour package/company? Any recommendations of activites on CI?
I am also considering Sea World and Univeral (we have a 6 year old). Would either of those options be better?
Thanks!

IMHO - A 6 year old would not really enjoy Catalina that much. I think you all would really enjoy Sea World or The San Diego Zoo. The Zoo here is wonderful and other than DLR, it would be my number 1 pick. :)

The Catalina Express (ferry) is $49.00 (US) round trip from Long Beach. I have never ridden it, but I understand from those that have, it is an hour long. They have a website:

It takes you to Avalon which is has alot of activity. Shops galore, dozens of bars and nightclubs and of course, the Casino, which isn't really a "casina" as we know it and in fact, never was. For a more rustic island experience, I would suggest Two Harbors on the west side of the island. The Isthmus has 1 restraunt, 1 bar, and 1 store. Lots of camping there, and a few rooms, but you have to reserve early. I have been there every summer for the past 6 years, but I stay on a sailboat so I don't know the names or rates. Two harbors has a website:

I agree that a 6 year old wouldn't enjoy Catalina too much. The zoo would be my number 1 pick with Sea World a close second.

My husband and I are taking a romantic getaway this month to Catalina. The tours run $20 To $40 per person (glass bottom boats, jeep rides, etc,) on top of the boat fare. Like others, I would not really consider Catalina a great place for a 6-y/o. I would take her to Sea World over Catalina in a heartbeat!

Don't forget Legoland in Carlsbad! Tailor made for 6 years olds.

I agree on Legoland!
And the crowds are "medium to light" on summer weekends. Weekdays and off season it was as though we had the whole park to ourselves. I totally get my $$$$s worth there with 3 kids!!

IMHO catalina island is not worth it. we actually spent two nights there once and we were so bored. the best thing we did was rent a golf cart. The second time we went it was a day trip and the tour was nice, btu personally I would not spend the $47.00 for the ferry and the $27-$35 for the tour. I did pay the $60.00 to rent the golf cart for 3 hours, but I was really bored at the time...usually when i go I don't pay they are taken care of for me...:)
