When I went to Disneyland last spring, FastPass tickets were only available through packages at the resort. We got ours through AAA. Is this still the case? What other advantages are there (besides proximity) to staying on site during the 50th? PS - I am planning a trip for early March, 2006.

We went last summer, and two summers ago and stayed off site and were still able to use the fast pass system.

FastPasses are available to anyone with a passport.

It is only the Enhanced FastPass, which allows you to hold a FastPass for every FastPass attraction at once that requires a booking into a Disney Property through AAA. The normal FastPass allows you to get a single FastPass for an attraction and you can't get another one until your return time arrives - or two hours passes, whichever comes first.
