View Full Version : It's a Small Building

Ok, so I was riding small world yesterday and all I kept thinking is that why do they make it obvious that we're inside a building. I mean, come on, we're traveling around the world, but sometimes it seems we're traveling through a warehouse. Pirates of the Caribbean's show building is dark and it looks as if there is no ceiling. Although you can see the ceiling of Splash Mountain, at least the camoflouge it with vines. Haunted Mansion, totally black. Indiana Jones, same thing. And don't even get me started on Space Mountain. So why can't they paint the ceiling black or something. Or, if you've ever been to Las Vegas, most of the casinos have the "sky" ceiling. I think it would be cool if they were to input something like that into Small World.

It is black. With squares. The jungle themed room has vines to hide the ceiling. I find the ceiling a lot better then the big curtined blank walls. Needless to say, my kids do not notice the ceiling, only I do, on the hundredth time through.

Too Funny! My last time through I was staring at the ceiling noticing the things hanging from it and how they work and are not hidden.
See great minds think alike

Maybe to keep it as close to the original Worlds Faire Attraction it was originally built for?

Last time I went through there, I noticed the ceiling panels as well. Funny thing is, I didn't notice them until I was 33 years old. I figured the lighting had been changed. Have the panels always been there or did they have some other false ceiling in there?

I actually don't mind it the way it is. It feels very old school and original to me. I never noticed the ceiling when I was a kid and when I ride through and see the wonder filled looks on my boy's faces, I know they don't see it either.

Not many people stare at the ceiling as far as I know...

I dig it. I don't know why, but I do. Maybe it is because I feel like I am back in the 50's. Seeing the ceiling in Indy would make no sense, but in Small World I love it!

What kind of ceiling treatment would you recommend?

Keep in mind that things are hanging from it.

Also keep in mind that if you make the ride look different fans will get upset.

The original imagineers figured everyone would be going on the ride for the first time, maybe twice. Why would they be staring at the ceiling?

So, how would you fix it?

My kids 5 and 7 have not said anything about the ceiling (or et. al.) yet, and it is one of the first rides they want to go on. I can't count how many times they have been on it and they always ask to go again.

I think they might be excited to have their feet actually glued to the floor there as some spiels joke about!

When I was there last Dec I noticed that too, and I still think about it from time to time. I think that some parts of the ceiling are painted black, but then some are white panels. I thought it was weird that you are going through this beautiful colorful ride with the music and so much to look at and then I look up and it's like an office building ceiling. Seriously the first time that I noticed something on a ride that didn't really go with the whole theme... well except the exit signs obviously. One of my favorite parts of Disneyland is that even the light fixtures and door handles etc. are always part of the whole theme package... like an all-inclusive experience. White paneled ceiling just didn't fit... in my opinion.

I seem to recall thinking about that when I rode the Paris version.. I think they had darker panels that were more blue.. can't remember properly though.. I do remember seeing some stuff up there and thinking "ahh, so that's how they make that move like that..."
