We are traveling from Australia April 5 to 21 planning to spend 5th to 12th in DLR. But something big must be going on from Thursday 7th to Sat 9th as some Hotels prices go up to over 5 times the Monday or Tues prices e.g

Anaheim Plaza $75.00 to $504.00

Park Inn $169.00 to $421.00

Days Inn $87.00 to $504.00

Ramada Ltd $119.00 to $673.00

All prices in Aussie Dollars.

What worries me is even if i find a place who havent increased their rates is how busy is Disneyland going to be?
should i wait till Monday the 11th to start my time at Disney?

Any help by you knowlegable locals will be great

thanks Bill

My guess is the Spring Vacation time. Although on the calendar for DLR the last two weeks of March are reserved for spring break people, but the hotels maybe extended their vacation rates beyond those two weeks. Or they could be getting a head start on the summer rates. In any case I would recommend trying Hotwire (http://www.hotwire.com), Orbitz (http://www.orbitz.com), Travelocity (http://www.travelocity.com), or Priceline (http://www.priceline.com) to get a decent discount on hotel rates.

Probably spring break for a lot of places and possibly a cheerleading competition?

Doing a quick check of the Anaheim calendar, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is holding their annual convention, expecting approximately 20,000 out-of-town attendees. Also, there is a cheerleader convention which is expecting about 5000 attendees. Add to that the spring break weekend crowds, and that would explain the price differences.

Now, you could probably find some other hotels a bit further out, and use a rental car, if you wanted to save some money

Those rates definitely tell you that lodging is at a premium.
Even if this is due to conventions, many of the attendees will also schedule in some Disney time.
I would wait until the dust settles, hopefully by the 11th.

What site are you checking prices on. I have seen this happen on Expedia a few times and I don't think the price is real. There have been a couple times where hotels appeared at $10 as well and people snatched them up only to find it was a computer glitch. I beleive Expedia had to honor the price. $500 for the Anaheim Plaza has to be a mistake!!!!

Hi Bill -

If you look very closely on Expedia.com you will see that the Anaheim Plaza only goes up dramatically like that when booking the room with a king bed. If you book the two double beds, it's $70 on the 7th and $80 on the 8th (US Dollars). Good luck! There's no need to pay that much for hotels at ANY time of year in Anaheim - there's just too many rooms available no matter what size convention. Even the Disneyland Hotel showed available both nights at $285US.

Actually, I am using the Anaheim/OC Visitor's bureau site, here: http://www.anaheimoc.org/convcalendar/index.cfm?mnth=5&yr=2005#top

They have projected attendence numbers for each of the conventions, especially helpful if the event is not at the convention center itself. From comments made by one of the VC people we talked to a while back, you can frequently expect hotels to block out rooms for the entire attendance, depending on the group. (And not just for the out of town count)

An article on high Spring Break hotel prices and demand, and room shortages just appeared today:

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050310/105495_1.html

Also addresses general increased demands outside of the Spring Break period, that many of you may find interesting.

Excerpt:
"Some prime hotels in top destinations are already filling up for spring and summer," said Sandra Hughes, AAA Travel Vice President. "Leisure travelers got spoiled during the last couple years, knowing that they could often wait until the last minute and snare a discounted hotel room. This year, if you wait until the last minute, you might be out of luck."
