Did anyone else read this article? It talks about making the ride PotC change at night to a scarier ride with skeletons. I personally think this seems like a neat idea because the original attraction wouldnt be going anywhere and you could still ride it in the day. Any other thought on this?

That sounds cool! And I don't think even PotC purists could diss that idea, because the original ride would still be running during the day.

(Watch, the next post is going to be a PotC purist dissing the idea. :p )

POTC Purist Dissing the Idea stepping up:

hehheh no...I'm torn. Sounds ridiculous. I feel for the one family who has the one day pass and cant get on it till after the sun goes down.

Now if they allowed people to 'choose' which side to go on (think red cars ~vs~ swingey cars on the Sun Wheel) and as long as they dont mess with the original, then and only then could I get on board.

It's an outright blatant way to try to cash in on the commercialism of the movie. I don't think it would be accomplished well simply for the fact that the ride moves so slowly.

all good and all, but, correct me if im wrong but, doesnt the entire ride take place at night anyway? why would you have to wait for the sun to actually go down outside when the ride itself is themed to take place at night? i dont see the haunted mansion as a jolly fun house during the day and suddenly overrun by 999 happy haunts once the sun goes down? i get the whole, "well now its dark outside....bla bla bla" but still.

I think its a great idea, but have a feeling that the executives that be will never spend the money required to make it happen. And commercializing on a movie...whats wrong with that?? Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White etc etc etc....all movies...

It sounds intriguing. Provided that they don't mess with the original.

I like Victoria's idea of chosing cars. Then they wouldn't have to do the night only thing, they can run it all day.

I too feel for the family that can only get on once after dark. But sometimes I feel that way about HMH too. What if there were great signage informing people of what they are getting into? Then they can choose to ride or not.

The only other thing is that I wouldn't want it too scary, maybe just a tad scary. To me, Disney and scary do not mesh well together. I still like Walt's original idea of rides the whole family can do together. This would make Piglet hesitate.

Sounds awesome to me. The ride really won't be tampered with, just added to.

Hmm. Maybe wait a little past sundown. Maybe even until after the fireworks.

I personally think they should just make a new attraction over at DCA in the Hollywood Backlot and make a Pirates of the Caribbean ride based on the movie. This way they have no limitations and can make it way scarier and better with a fast moving boat like a roller coaster in the water.

Except that it would cost $$$MILLIONS$$$, while modifying the existing ride would only cost $millions$. Personally I think it's a great idea. Like the Haunted Mansion overlay, except it's done every day rather than once a year. I haven't heard too many people complain that the Haunted Mansion overlay ruins the original character of that attraction, and I don't think the POTC changes would detract at all from Walt's original ride.

Remember though, we haven't even heard an official go-ahead on the reopening of the submarines, so don't make any vacations plans quite yet that involve the new Pirates.

Yeah, but wasn't the movie based on the Ride that is already there???

I like Victoria's idea of chosing cars. Then they wouldn't have to do the night only thing, they can run it all day.

Well what they could do is: Everyone knows that there are two lines leading up to loading area. Now that the FP are gone, we could actually use both sides of the line outside. Anyway, two lines go to the loading area, the one on the left leads to the first boat and the right line leads to the second boat. All they would have to do is set it so the first boat goes to the Skeletal Pirates and the second boat stay on the original track. That would be an efficient way to satisfy everyone. At the main entrance to the que outside they could simply put signs.

I actually like the idea. Maybe they could test it for a season like they did Fastpass when it first was used.

well, I know that most boat rides can have flume switches. I don't see why this one need be any different.

I also think this could be a fun Halloween overlay, provided that HM and PotC are never closed at the same time.

And, as I've posted elsewhere, I think a DCA "Pirate Moonlight" could be a great E ticket for that prime real estate in HPB. Have a preshow about SFX, include some of the materials that were in the Disney Gallery, etc., then let people ride through the magic. Of course, the theme is SFX, so that the exterior will fit the land, and the ride and/or queue can be rethemed as needed.

I guess I'm just excited that WDI is actually trying to come up with a good ride for a change, AND preserving the classic attraction in the process.

I don't understand how you guys think it would be cheap to entirely duplicate the ride and have a second flume? Wouldn't that cost almost as much as building a new ride? The only savings would be in the line and loading area.

I think it's a really good idea but I don't like being scared so there's NO way I'd go on it! My friends, however, would be ALL over that!!! Esp. the ones who like the movie.

You can call it curse of the black pearl instead of just pirates of the caribbean. :)

This is very true. They would also have to match the quality of the entire attraction which is a very expensive task to do. Also they would have to do construction on the current scenes making a tunnel for the second flume.

Has anyone ever noticed that they sometimes take props in and out of PotC?

When we went last September I noticed a extra donkey in the PotC ride...the next day it was gone and I saw an extra donkey in the Pinochio ride???

Or on PotC when the pirate is holding the plate of fruit from the donkey and dog well the next day the dog was gone...

creepy....

If they gave riders at choice at night, I suspect the "cursed pirate" line would be really, really long, and the regular side very very short . If this ever gets installed (and I won't for a minute believe it until I hear it from a better source than (my friend who knows an important guy ,but I can't tell his name, but he's never steered me wrong) they'll have to plan for the huge crowds it will attract (at least at first) and that means opening up both lines. They would need very clear signage and still have the CMs mention the extra scariness to those who have little kids with them.

I wasn't sure if i remember reading about an existing flume ride (or imagining one) that takes each boat/ride vehicle vertically up through a large tube, like a water elevator, to another, higher level then letting each boat zoom back down (to the original level) through a series of switchback flume slides; perhaps themed to a water spout/typhoon experience, but if money was not an issue (Ha!), this "alternate route" would be fun to see & ride. Don't know if/how pirate ghosts could be incorporated into something like this and i imagine parts of the original show building walls would have to be altered/redesigned to fit the machinery and ride route, so we know something like this would never see the light of day (and/or simulated night). It's fun to imagine though...
