Do AP's expire one year after purchase or after the calendar year no matter when you purchase it?

When are special AP rates ususally offered at DLR hotels? Also, what restaurants can you get the 10% discount at?

I am looking at purchasing an AP for myself and a regular parkhopper for DH just so we can get these discounts and possibly be able to afford to stay at DLH if AP rates are available. (We are looking at going in early November or early December.)

Correction: 365 days (what happens on leap year?) after first day of use.

mousesavers and possibly this web site has all the information you need regarding AP discounts.
And thank you for qualifying this question as frequently asked. Pardon me, I need to go update my sig.

So if I purchase my AP online today but don't use it until December 6, 2005, it will expire on December 5, 2006 (a year from first use) or will it expire January 5, 2006 (a year from purchase)?

Thanks for the clarification!

It will expire one year from your first day of use. We bought ours in May 2004, used them for the first time on July 17,2004, they expire on July 17 2005. Nice date huh?

Will I be able to get AP rates at DLR hotels without having "used" the AP?

Yes. I think you'll just have to show it upon arrival.

Probably, there is a number on the card they send you that is your ID number as a pass holder. I know I was able to log on to Disney.com as a passholder before I activated it in the park and got my photo ID pass.

Worst case senario, you will have to go to the park and activate your AP and then go back to the hotel.

I just did the same thing at WDW and was told during the reservation process that an AP voucher might not be allowed. Then when I got to the front desk of the hotel (wilderness lodge) they accepted the voucher.

Actually, the question you pose can't be answered. As I recall, the pass has to be activated within three months of its purchase date (at least that's what it used to be, don't know if that's changed), so you wouldn't be able to hold it until December 6, 2005 if you bought it today. But if you bought it today and waited until February 8, 2005 to activate it, it would expire on February 7, 2006.

Actually, if your first use was on July 17, 2004, the pass should technically expire on July 16, 2005, unless someone miscalculated or decided to be nice.

As I understand it, if you fail to activate the AP voucher within the 3 month period, one of two things will happen...

1. The AP experation date would be the date at the end of the expiration period (for example, you bought a voucher on March 10th, and the voucher expired on May 31st.. your AP would would have and expiration date of May, 31, 2006.

OR

2. If you try and get an AP after the expiration date, they would take the price paid for the AP voucher and apply it towards the current price of an AP... let's say the price went up $40 between today and December, when you tried to use your voucher, you would get a choice, an AP with a 5/31/06 expiration date, or you would need to pay an extra $40 to get an expiration date of 12/6/06.

One last question (I think)... When are special rates generally offered to AP'ers at the DLR hotels? I assume January and February but are there other times?

seems to me about every 2-3 months (yes, even in the summer though the discounts aren'ty as good). This summer might be different however.

We stayed at the DLH in July and in August. I think in July we paid $139 or $149/night and in August it was $159. The rates aren't as good as during off season (we're staying the end of Jan and my weeknight rate is $99/night) but they are a discount. With the 50th celebration this year, it will be interesting to see the price breaks that are offered and what they are.
