I understand Disneyland is closing for one day on May 4th 2005 to finish prep for their 50th Anniversary.

But what special activities or things are they going to have on the first celebration day, May 5th? And for the remainder of time until July 17th? That is 74 days difference.

For their 40th, they passed out the 40 card set, 1 per day before July 17th. That's all I know about, I wasn't there that day.

I like the fact they are refurbishing a lot of attractions and buildings.

If anyone knows if anything special is planned for May 5th, please let me know.
Thanks !

According to A.L., Buzz ride might be having its official grand opening.

I'm curious to know this as well. Will there be a bigger celebration on the 5th than on July 17th? Why is the "re-opening" May 5th then? It's al confusing to me!!!

THANK YOU FOR ASKING THIS QUESTION!!!! I have been wondering the very same thing myself. Should I go in May or July? If July 17 is the BIIIIIG deal, I will wait. I have to come from Seattle, so, it's not that easy to take off of work, etc. etc. If anyone has a concrete answer, I would love to know as well!

Maybe because May 5th is 5/5/05? That was my guess. I also heard that Buzz is opening that day too.

But what they have on 5/5 won't deter me from going on 7/17. To me it is more important to be there on the actual day. I can't say I was there opening day (wasn't alive yet), but I can tell my grandkids someday I was there on the 50th!

EXACTLY! I wasn't alive in 1955 either (I was in 1961! Yikes!) and I want to say the very same, "I WAS THERE ON THE 50TH". I don't care if I am run over by a stampede of people, I want to be there ON the day. (And will arrive before that day to enjoy it before the stampede!!!) What is this Buzz thing everyone is talking about?? Forgive my ignorance!

I'm not going again until after Space Mountain opens back up. I probably won't be there until early 2006

From what I hear, they'll be putting the finishing touches on the decoration of the park for the beginning of the ongoing 50th-birthday celebration the next day.

Yep. It's 05-05-05. Give it the ol' Serutan twist and it's 50-50-50.

05-05-05 is the first day of the 15-month "birthday celebraton" for Disneyland. May, '05 - July '06.

The completed Castle decorations will be unveiled.
Buzz will officially open.
The new Disneyland parade will premiere.
The new DCA "block party" parade will premiere.
The new fireworks will premiere.
There will most certainly be a gigantic media event in front of the castle.

Space Mountain is supposed to reopen in November 05.

It's Buzz lightyear. The new ride that is going into tomorrowland. They already have it at WDW. It's a lazer tag ride (or so I've heard). You ride around on a little car (like Mr. Toads tye car) and shoot targets in the ride with a lazer gun. I heard it's pretty fun.

So about 05-05-05: I heard the BIG day is May 5 (technically speaking). May 4 is the day that the park will be closed, so they can put the finishing touches on everything for the following day. I'm somewhat still confused though as to why Buzz and this large celebration doesn't wait 2 more months til July 17?

That's my thinking exactly, the 17th of July is more important than anything else. And if it's only BUZZ opening on May 5, Big Deal !

"I WAS THERE ON THE 50TH". I don't care if I am run over by a stampede of people, I want to be there ON the day. (And will arrive before that day to enjoy it before the stampede!!!)

BE THERE EARLY !! I remember Christmas Day about 3 years ago they stopped letting people in at 11 or 12 because they were "full". My friend couldn't even get into the Mickey/Friends parking lot.

I used to only be 10 minutes from the Park, but I too will be there the day before. And stay for the day after.

My Dad, who is now 75 years young, just told me the other day he was there on opening day 07-17-55 singing in a choir on Main Street. I should drag him there again!

Yes, they do close the doors early for big ocassions. Usually happens on Christmas and New Years (I went for New Years '95 and they closed at 5 pm!!), but 50th will propbably be one of those times.

And yes, Space Mountains open date has been pushed back several times. Last I heard, it was November 2005.

You would think by now, 50 years of experience, they would know that taking on a huge task like re-modeling/painting/+whatever to Space Mtn, it would take FOREVER for them to finish it.

As it is, that will make it about 2 years, 7 months in the works. But then again, that's the way things have gone in recent years. That is a huge bummer !!

Wow. What a relatively obscure but thematicaly correct reference you slipped in there :)

It could be read more than one way, I suppose, but I applaud your choice of words.

Dang, for some reason I thought this was an 18 month celebration into October. Are we sure on the 15 month thing? Wouldn't they at least run it until Labor Day '06? I was hoping they'd do it until they started their holiday parade and fireworks sometime after October '06.

Can anyone else confirm the 15 vs 18 month thing? May affect my 2006 plans. Yeah, I know I need to get a life--planning way too far in advance. :geek:

Thanks! Have a great day!

I actually heard the same thing: 18 months of celebration.

Aw, come on... it isn't as if the whole Disneyland was built in a year, is it?

Aw, come on... it isn't as if the whole Disneyland was built in a year, is it?

Well, actually it was less than a year - here's a quote for some history I found on the park:

"Construction for Disneyland began on July 21, 1954, a meager 12 months before the park was scheduled to open. From that day forward Walt Disney's life would never be the same."

Now do you know how I feel?
