This is from my mother-in-law....
she called up to say that she saw on the news that they are planning to put a casino in Disneyland park behind autopia...

can this be true?

I hope not

story is that california indians are claiming they own part of the land the park is built on, and, well, they want to play too...

Granted, I have not seen this story yet, and would like to know if anyone here has also heard of any news?

Got to increase revenues somehow, get that stock price up!

Let me see, what shall the theme be... Something Disney, something dark...
Of course they will be serving booze and most likely they will be hiring Hookers... Calling all CM's :fez:

QuikQuote:
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- City officials have talked to casino developer Steve Wynn about building an Indian casino and resort just blocks from Disneyland.

The city, located in Orange County, is considering selling as much as 45 acres to the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians, a San Diego County tribe that wants to build a resort with shopping, restaurants and live entertainment comparable to Las Vegas.

It's so - but not the way your mom repeated it to you. The proposed development is actually in Garden Grove.

Two comments...

I always like how these casinos like to compare themselves to Vegas casinos. Maybe like downtown. But the major strip casinos are in a league all by themselves.

However, it has been widely suggested that WDW's Boardwalk Hotel is wired for the possibility of legalized gaming in Florida. And Disney has regularly been suggested as a potential player in the Vegas market, though likely under a different brand much like they have done with the film industry. Potential buy targets would include Aztar, the holding company of the Tropicana; and the Aladdin before it was picked up by Starwood. Another angle would be to develop a non-gaming resort -- though that would be in total opposition to the current adult-oriented trend.

Seems like if Disney was really thinking about doing that, they would have done it on their cruise line first, as most cruises already have a casino. Yet even with all their adult (No, not that kind of adult) entertainment on the boat already (bars & such), it would fit in there better. But I doubt they'll go quite that far..

Even though they _did_ have bingo on the boat, with a $30 (I think it was $30) buy-in, with a sizeable jackpot. (The largest being a few thousand), so I guess Disney already has some gambling.

(And a few teenagers won too!)

I think it would be cool if disney built a casino in vegas, but the one they are talking about near disneyland isnt going to have any conection to disney right? I dont see how it stands a chance next to disneyland because people pay all that money to go to DL not go to a casino. If they want to gamble they will just go to vegas.

I'd rather through my money away on Disneyland then any casino anywhere.
We have an Indian casino 21 miles away never been in it. I go to Reno once a month, even if I stay in one of the casino hotels in Reno I don't gamble I go for the shopping.

That's all DL needs, a casino for the parents to go to after a day at DL to get drunk and spend the rest of the money that they didn't at the park. I wonder if the payouts will be in Disney dollars. That would a good idea for Disney. Allow the casino to use DL characters and trademarks and the payout will be in Disney dollars.

Amagine taking your young one to the casino to to meet the 8th dwarf, Drunky.

I love casinos, but I like vegas style. I've been to state line (of course) and laughlin, but if I'm going to gamble I'm going to vegas. I enjoy gambeling. Balck Jack id the best, craps is way fun, and soem of the slot machines can be entertaining. I look at it this way. If I go to DL I'm going to be blowing $200.00 at least. If I go to Vegas I'm going to be blowing $100.00 per day. So, I don't go overboard with gambeling, but I think it's fun. I have a very strict policy though. I bring $100.00 to play with. If I win it goes in the win pile and does not get used to gambel with. When the $100.00 is gone , it's gone. I usually come out ahead or break even..:)..oh, and even though the drinks are free, I never drink while I gamble...LOL

The cruise line seemed to be very targetted toward the family market. So I dont expect gaming was ever considered for the cruise product line. Early on, I recall the family-centric angle being a negative to booking the line and it has taken them time to build an audience.

On the other hand, I'm not sure we are ready for Blackjack Dealer Mickey, Pitboss Donald, Valet Goofy, Sportsbook Pluto, and Showgirl Minnie. My guess is they develop a new brand.

A friend does have a really good idea for an Alice in Wonderland - themed Vegas casino.

I think that's true. The land is located just to the right of the train tracks before you get to the Toon Town station :p .

If Disney were to have a casino, it should be based on Oogie Boogie's casino lair! :D

If Disney backed a casino and allowed Disney theming I'd puke. :(

I honestly doubt I'd ever go to Disneyland again, as much as that pains me.

I think Walt would turn in his grave.

I'm curious - why would you object so much? I could understand if it was seedy or poorly done, but I could totally see how a Disney-themed casino would be fun. I can picture something along the lines of Circus Circus (but without the Pepto Bismol pink, please), where there's stuff for kids to do and there's a casino area as well. And I'll admit that I don't know that much about Walt, but was there anything that he said or did that leads you to believe that he was against gambling or casinos or would make you think that he would object to this idea?

I dont think walt would obect as long as it is for the whole family and is well kept with a new spin on things. Just like what he did for amusment parks. And if disney did a casino i am sure they wouldnt do it as a partner deal with the indians. They would want all the money to themsleves and do it on their own.

Sally Skellington-I like your idea of the Oogie Boogie Lair as the theme of a Disney casino. Or it could be something like the bad guys from Pinochio ran on the island!

Scubabe-you live "dangerously" at $100 per day ...I look at gambling like entertainment and I'm never willing to spend more than $20.

GrumpyUTboi-Are you assuming that everyone who goes to a casino (or rock concert) gets drunk? I've never been to Vegas, but the casinos at North Lake Tahoe are pretty mild. They have tables where the parents can sit and play blackjack, but still keep an eye on their kids at the arcade. When we go with grown-ups and kids, we drink soda and we usually end up going over to the arcade after a while and playing Skeeball and Dance Dance Revolution with the kids! They're not allowed to be in the casino!

Well IMO Walt opened Disneyland for one main reason...so that families could get away from the real world and play together. That whole story about him taking his girls to the merry go round and he would have to sit on the bench thing?? yeah....he wanted family time and be able to play alongside his girls. So he made a place where that could happen.

Gambling is not exactly a family activity.

I think personally that Las Vegas is a pit. I was there once and detested every second of it.

This is all of course in my personal opinion. so please dont anyone rant and rave and try to prove to me how wrong I am.
I will never see gambling as a family entertainment venue.

"Here' honey let daddy hold your cig while you throw the dice"

Oh and to add insult to injury I am one of the few (I suppose) who cant stand to see alcohol in a Disney park either. Figure if Im gonna open a can of worms I may as well crawl around and get good and comfy

Mystycalchky-I understand what you're saying about Walt Disney wanting families to spend time together at DL so I'm not going to try to prove you wrong. But parents don't have to spend every minute with their kids when they're on vacation.

I know several families where the parents travel with grandparents or their siblings who also have kids. That way, after the parents have already spent a long day with their kids, they can leave them at the hotel for a few hours with Grandma and Grandpa or Auntie and Uncle and go out on a date. I think this arrangement benefits everyone in a positive way.

What appeals to me about the casino is that it's one place I could be sure there wouldn't be any kids if my husband and I decided to take a break or were traveling by ourselves. The proposal is for a casino near DL, not inside DL isn't it?

Gee, I am currently in Las Vegas.......

Wet and Wild, LOTS of kids, alas the park is closing next month... (Lost their lease)

Circus Circus, LOTS of kids...... (2 different areas designed for them, but you have to walk thru the casino to get to them)

The Malls, lots of kids/teenagers......

And as officially announced yesterday, the Hooters Hotel Casino, opening late next year (they are going to remodel the San Remo to the Hooters theme, along with 4 restaurants....)

I don't think that a casino should be part of the DLR, but I think an upgrade of DCA at night to be more of adult nightlife would be a nice addition........

As for a casino near the DLR, heck there are Strip clubs just blocks away, what is the difference?

Even if an indian tribe wanted to build a casino they can't just buy the land and then start construction. First the land must be placed into trust for them by the federal gov't. Then the tribe must sign a gambling compact with the state of CA. One more hurdle timewise is that the Legislature is going to be wrapping up business by the end of August. So even if the tribe wanted to negotiate they will apparently have to wait until at least November to start anything.

Herr Govenfuhrer claims to be opposed to urban casinos. Of course, yesterday he approved what will be the 3rd largest casino in the country for San Pablo in the Bay Area. Cheers.

Like I said, I was expressing my personal opinion. I never said people dont do it all the time.

And as far as the strip clubs? well they arent Disney themed, and Disney supported, Im sure

My expressed thought was that if Disney backed and themed a casino for the DLR I would probably never support that park again.

Again, I already know I am in the minority. I dont really care. Im not trying to change any of your thoughts or opinions, I am simply expressing my own.
There's lots of thing I dont do that the majority of the world probably thinks is hunky dory, and probably things I do that others may think are off kilter. Tis my life. And it would be my choice to pull my measly ickle support, however minute, from a supposed family themed park if they chose to theme and support something like that. YMMV
