This morning i was watching one of the old vault disney shows about early dl with my 7 and 4 year old girls. The oldest one commented on how much better dl looked back then and wondered why they got rid of all the good stuff! This led to an in depth disscusion of the history of Disney, the greatness of Walt, an the dark days of Eisner. Her solution to the current problem is simple: everyone who loves Disney should collect all their money together and buy dl back from Eisner, and restore it to its' former glory. I have a couple thousand, and the kids have about $30. Anybody else want to chip in?

what a great idea! I actually wondered how many of those "one shares" it would take to give the Disney fans a voice in the votes.....just another thought to ponder

maybe if dan steinberg is reading, he could figure out how much it would cost.

You called?

(Okay, I wasn't reading this thread. But somebody pointed me to it.)

Here goes: To take control of Disney, you'd need to control just over 50% of the outstanding stock. Since Disney currently has 2,093,298,000 shares outstanding, you'd need to control 1,046,649,001 shares. That would cost in the neighborhood of $19.5 billion.

So if each Disney fan contributed $10,000, we'd need 1,958,280 Disney fans to buy the company.

A cheaper alternative would be to buy enough of the company to get a seat or two on the board of directors. Since there are 16 directors, you'd (depending how Disney does its elections) need about 6% of the shares to get one seat. That would only take $2.5 billion or so.

Maybe we could just buy Disneyland instead? The entire Parks and Resorts Group had $12 billion in assets, so let's guess DL is 25% of that. That would be $3 billion for the DL Resort. I figure you'd have to overpay somewhat as well (for sentimental value and all) - let's figure 1.5x on the assets . So you could buy the Disneyland Resort for about $4.5 billion - assuming the company would want to part with it.

Now, aren't you glad you asked?

Serious.

Of course, I haven't gotten off my lazy butt to go yet, but whenever I'm ready, Uncle Sam will pay the bill.

I'll go to school again fall 2002, after I come back from a European holiday.

Oh yeah, the topic of buying Disneyland;

If we each pay $100, it'll only take 45 million of us.

90 million of my closest friends and I are going in together to buy it for $50 each. Any takers? (except zappop--yours costs $100 still :) --just the jealousy talking as I pay my college loans until 2031)
