The Candlelight Processional takes place this Saturday and Sunday, December 2 & 3 at Disneyland. Started by Walt Disney in 1958 as a community appreciation event, the show features a Candlelight choir made up of cast members and community choir members, who perform music provided by the Disneyland orchestra. Guest narrators are invited to read the Christmas story in between songs.

Disney has not yet announced the narrator for the 2017 event(s). "Once Upon a Time" star Ginnifer Goodwin narrated the 2016 Candlelight Ceremony and Processional. Her "Once" co-star Lana Parilla hosted in 2015.

After trying a few times to make this a larger public offering, with dining packages and reserved viewing, Disney has returned to the practice of treating Candlelight as a private event that just happens to take place in the middle of an operating theme park. Invited guests include community and civic leaders, as well as media and Club 33 members.

Even if you are don't have an invitation to sit in the reserved seating area, you have some options if you want to view the ceremony and are willing to devote most of your day to saving a prime seat on Main Street.

Standby viewing is very limited, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Bench seating is available near the Christmas tree on the west side of Town Square; standing room-only locations are located near City Hall, the Opera House, and any open spaces behind the seating area in Town Square. Part of the stand-by viewing area for the first performance opens at park opening (8 a.m. each day, with Extra Magic Hour and Magic Morning at 7 a.m. on Saturday), and die-hard Candlelight fans will arrive at park opening to claim their bench or patch of curb to wait for the evening performance.

If you don't care about having the perfect sight line to the narrator's podium and are willing to wait for the second show of the night, the stand-by line for the second performance forms on Main Street as soon as the processional passes for the first performance, usually around 5:30 p.m. Check with the guest control cast members wearing red vests, and they can give you updated information on Candlelight day so you know exactly when and where to return.

It's not exactly shabby at DL. We love CP at the MS train station. When it was moved to the FL theatre, it just wasn't the same.

Which means one of three things....either DL doesn't know until last minute, DL knows person will be popular and don't want a huge rush into the park, or DL knows person will be unpopular and doesn't want people to know that until the last minute. :D

We are not going. We did it a couple of times, including the very first one I went to where it was that I actually met Jeff at the park opening ticket mad dash to Fantasyland theatre many years ago. ...ah good times! Since Arg, we have typically stayed away and will again this year and see a holiday show in a couple of weeks where tickets are pre-purchased with guaranteed seating, indoors, and not as crazy. :p

Chris Hemsworth is the narrator tonight. We had to leave the park because it was so crazy. Just heard that they will stop allowing people into the park so it doesn’t get a mad rush.

Can you play a banjo too?

Yup, enough to drive a crowd away. :)

My daughter and son in-law went Saturday and she met and got a photo with AJ from Backstreet Boys. It was too jammed to see CP though.

😱😱😵 Stupid schedule changes. Thor and AJ?

Chris Hemsworth is the narrator tonight.

He was pretty good too. I was amused, though, that while he read well and appeared calm and cool above the podium while he was doing it, I could see the lower part of the podium, and I could see that he was nervously shifting his feet and stance. At one point, after one of the longer passages, he kind of flashed a nervous smile at the crowd.

I was worried about how the audience would react. I mean, yeah, it's Chris Hemsworth, but it's also Candlelight, but for the most part, people were respectful. There were a few times that people called out to him but twice, they were actually pretty funny in their timing and with his response.

Oh, I posted some pictures here from the second show Saturday night (https://twitter.com/cstephens2/status/937463674654150656), if anyone's interested.

I think AJ was just there with his family. She saw him earlier with a Plaid, and then later without the escort. She politely asked for a photo and he complied.

We were at the 5:30 performance on Saturday, so when they announced CH as he came out, it was a surprise to the audience. Even he had been a nobody though, the whole performance was still spectacular and moving. The fact that he is about as popular as a movie star can be right now was overshadowed by the music and choirs. Having the mighty Thor read the Christmas story straight out of the Bible in a humble and straight-forward way was icing on the cake. This will definitely be a highlight of our Christmas season. I had to smile when he read "angles" instead of "angels" in one passage though. :)

He did an excellent job. When he walked out to do the sound check, the crowd became excited. (There was a LOT of fan girling going on!) (Photo cred to MDM as she took the sound check pic...)

That said, a friend's child commented "I didn’t know the story of baby Jesus could be any better, until Thor told it to me."

I'm going to dispute your use of the word "child".
