A couple of very interesting reads were posted today (January 26th)...

First, an article by Jim Hill titled "Message in a Bottle"

But -- you see -- it's not just a single water bottle. For years now, Disney theme park fans have been using the web as a forum for airing their complaints about the upkeep at the parks. Where corners are continually being cut. The folks back in Burbank think "No one's ever going to notice if we take a few hundred grand out of the Magic Kingdom's annual maintenance budget. Cut a few sweepers here, a few painters there. Who's going to notice the difference?"

Well, based on L.T.'s letter, it's clear that people DO actually notice when corners get cut at the Disney theme parks. And that they tell their friends and family members about the obvious cutbacks at the theme parks. And then -- just like in that old Breck commercial -- "They tell two friends and so on and so on ... "

Second, is an article written by Aaron Michael Gordon titled "Can Disney Be Saved?"

So the Disney we know and love is dead: an image from another time and place, swallowed whole by its newer, larger self. But that doesn't mean that the Disney magic is gone, and that what Walt Disney attempted to do with his vision is lost.

Tokyo Disneyland, wholly owned by a Japanese company (which licenses the rights from Disney), is a remarkable example of the Disney magic...even if Disney doesn't own, operate, or pay for it. The Pixar movies...especially "Finding Nemo", are a direct descendant of classics like "Bambi" than anything the "real" Disney has been putting out. The "Spider-Man" ride at "Universal Orlando", is a marvel of magic...and the true heir to "Star Tours." Boca Raton's Mizner Park is Main Street USA done for real, South Florida style (pink, European-centric, overpriced, beautiful.) The Disney Magic is there. It's just not necessarily at Disney.

Go over and read the entire articles, they are interesting reads for a Monday morning.....

While it's great to see Matt Ouimet starting to take care of the upkeep at DL, it's depressing to think Eisner is going to take the credit for it.
