OK, everyone...I am going out of my mind! We (my wife and I) are tring to make the lanterns that hang over you at the boat loading area. You know, the ones that glow as if they are an actual flame and not a light blub? Well we thought that it was the same as the Indiana Jones Tunnel lights so we followed the instructions that can be found at HiddenMickeys.com.

It doesn't work. I can get it to blink, but not that nice, glowing "flame" like at POTC.

Does any one know how this effect is made?

If you have any questions or any ideas on how to make the light bulb glow like it does there.

Thanks!

Try using flame bulbs.

I did...but they are too small to put out enough light to see by. They used to make a larger one, but i can't seem to find it any where.

Thanks, though!

Thanks...but they only put out 3 Watts, or the same light as a candle. There's a company called MagicGadgets.com that sells compleated lantrens for stage use...but they run $105.00 for the actual working parts, and anywhere from $200.00 to $400.00 a compleated one. Ouch! We need eight...

Thanks!

There are several ways to achieve the 'flicker' effect. For detailed plans on how to do it yourself, check this out:

To purchase a professional flicker light unit such as those used by Disney and other themed attraction designers, you can order it from here:

SynthaFlame Flicker Effects (http://www.monarchlighting.com/)

Between these two resources, I'm sure you'll find a solution that fits your budget.

Oh yes, one more thing. You can actually purchase an outdoor candle holder from the Sharper Image that uses a flickering light circuit to drive a hidden LED within the simulated candle. The system charges via built-in solar panels by day and illuminates your backyard with flickering candlelight by night. It even comes with its own mounting post.

I saw one in action this afternoon and was impressed by the effect. Wow, instant PotC! If you can afford to buy a bunch of them (at approximately $39.00 each), imagine how themed your backyard could be....
