Just announced today (https://www.mouseplanet.com/11692/Summer_of_Heroes_kicks_off_May_27_with_opening_of_ Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_attraction_at_DCA):

Summer of Heroes kicks off May 27 with opening of Guardians of the Galaxy attraction at Disney California Adventure

The new Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction will open May 27 at Disney California Adventure, Disney announced this morning. The new ride is part of what Disney calls "an ever-expanding universe of stories that will grow even bigger over time" at the park.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT! was built using the show building from the former Tower of Terror attraction, which closed at the start of 2017. The ride is based on the popular Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and opens just three weeks after the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hits theaters.

Disney says, "This new adventure blasts you straight into the "Guardians of the Galaxy" story for the first time ever, alongside characters from the blockbuster films and comics. As you help Rocket bust his pals out of the Collector's Fortress, you will experience randomized ride experiences complete with all-new visual and audio effects and music inspired by the popular film soundtracks. You never know which adventure you will get!"

The grand opening of the new ride kicks off Disney's Summer of Heroes marketing campaign, which promises to bring more of the Marvel universe into the Disneyland Resort. During the promotion, Disney will introduce both limited-time offerings, and also debut new year-round experiences.

"It's going to be a thrilling summer at the Disneyland Resort," said David Duffy, Director, Creative Entertainment. "You can celebrate the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission BREAKOUT! and join forces with legendary Super Heroes. You can choose an awesome encounter with Star-Lord, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Hawkeye or Captain America, step up to meet Groot for the first time, and find out if you have what it takes to join the Avengers. It's all part of the adventure with Summer of Heroes."

Limited offerings for the Summer of Heroes promotion include the Avengers Training Initiative, which sounds like a Marvel take on the Jedi Training Academy. "Black Widow and Hawkeye assemble young recruits for a series of tests to see if they have what it takes to join the ranks of the Avengers." Black Widow will also appear in Disney California Adventure throughout the day in an "armored Avengers vehicle" for a " heroic encounter with park guests."

Of course, there will be Avengers-themed food, beverage and merchandise offerings throughout the park for the Summer of Heroes promotion, as well as the new Guardians of the Galaxy attractions.

Also coming in May, but billed as a year-round experience, is a new Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! show. Disney's announcement reads, " Don't be surprised if you run into the Guardians of the Galaxy on their way to the Milano, with Star-Lord firing up his old-school boom box to get the party started. Gamora may prefer to stand back and observe, but everyone else is bound to get in the groove and show off their moves during this awesome rock 'n' roll bash!"

Possibly the best news for Guardians fans is a first-ever meet-and-greet opportunity with Groot. Groot will join Captain America and Spider-Man in Disney California Adventure.
The Summer of Heroes promotion runs May 27 through September 10, 2017.

May 27 is also the opening date for Pandora – The World of Avatar, at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park, giving the Disney Resorts on both coasts a marketing focus for the summer.

I was just wondering this morning if they would have any Galaxy characters for meet and greet this summer. I was hoping for Rocket, but I guess size might be an issue.

So is this going to be in both parks or just DCA? Really looking forward to it!

Just DCA. There is a rumor of a mini Marvel land in that back corner of the park. The retheming of ToT would be a good indicator of that.

Argh!!!! My season pass is set to expire on May 27th!!!! We are in Nor Cal and weren't planning on renewing due to a senior graduating high school next year and a freshman soccer player who travels all over the state.......just no time!

So my questions are:

1. Since this is a public announcement, is it possible/likely that the date will be pushed back?
2. Will they do any passholder unvelings before then? And if so how do we find out and jump on those?
3. Is it likely that the crowd level will be insanely high on the 27th?

We've never been passholders during the unveiling of a major new ride so I have no idea what to expect :) Thanks in advance for any experience or advice that you may have!

I am thinking that since they have publicly announced it they will stick with that date. Historically have they ever pushed a date back on a new major attraction or land?
I'm not an AP but from everything I have read here and at other sites, they usually have soft openings for AP's, but there's just no way to predict when/if it will happen for sure. Usually within a week or two of the open date it seems though.
The 27th falls on the Memorial Weekend so I am sure it's going to be insanely busy.

Keep an eye here and follow the AP Facebook page (pretty sure there is a twitter feed as well). Passholder previews come after cast member previews and are usually about 4 or 5 days before opening day. First come, to register on the website, first served kind of thing. Now, in the time between there are usually soft openings at random times. You are welcome to join the line with the understanding that they may have to shut the ride down and you don't get a return pass. We were able to ride Star Tours 2.0 on our last morning in the park, with these caveats, a couple of days before opening day. This was after watching CM and AP previews all week. We didn't get to ride Little Mermaid though, as they had just opened it up for CMs.

interesting that still - in all the advertising I have seen over time - the word "Marvel" is not found in any promotion at Disneyland.

and I wonder if it will be Adult Groot or baby groot. will Adult be only as tall as Chewbacca? it will be interesting to see.

I can't remember - do they reference Lucasfilm with regard to Star Tours or the Indy ride?

Well, since Lucasfilm didn't help create Start Tours - it was just "the imagination of Disney and George Lucas" - as well as Industrial Light and Magic who created the movie. Those two were referenced on the original commercials for Disneyland. for Indiana Jones correct there are no references - but back then Disney was in a licensing agreement only. Pixar is a subsidiary of Disney and it gets named quite a bit (not every time) in press and media announcements concerning attractions and events. Marvel is now a Disney brand but its not used in almost any announcements except for the specific discussions of brand and IP.

My take? since Universal still owns significant licensing of Marvel in Florida they won't use Marvel anywhere else so as to provide unique naming rights and reusability across multiple parks. And, yes, its my opinion on this last part, not based on any fact anywhere else. Just an observation...

Really excited for this! The first time many of these characters will be in the parks during non RunDisney times. I'll be checking it out before the D23 Expo!
