I really hope Disney gets this refurb right...it sounds very promising and would be a welcomed update. even with the mention of a new "Harold" and tech upgrades...they really need to get these sleds fixed once and for all.

people have always speculated that legal had a hand in how the sleds were designed in terms of what was allowed and what was not in order to meet certain criteria. Its never been confirmed - but if they have any say again in how this new proposed refurbishment is going to be run I hope we get a decent compromise.

Funny, I heard that, too.

I would be happy with a decent drop. And some angled turns so that they're not so hard on the spine.

Unless they tear down the whole thing and rebuild it from the ground up, they're not going to be able to add drops or smooth out turns, or even smooth out the ride much.

But they could add a loop!

I just rode the updated version for the first time about a month ago and I must say that I was laughing and smiling and crying all at the same time.

Always have loved the jerks and bumps but with those new cars I felt more banged up and bruised. Not to mention at 6'4" it was pretty tight and I could not get my knees from being bumped by the hard sidewalls of the cars.

They could take out sections of the track and lay new track, making it smoother in parts. As far as the new sleds go, I have no hope of replacements. A new Harold would be awesome! As long as he does not break like the one in EE and no one cares enough to fix it.

My only fear for the new Harold - video projection. Can't see it working for a snarling beast.

When I rode the MH with the new sleds, I found them not to be as bad as some people had complained, but certainly not as comfortable as the old sleds (not that I'd call those comfy either). With such an extended refurb, I expect they will try to do something to retro fit a bit more padding into the design or add additional had grips. I did find that if you leaned into the turns a bit, you didn't get jostled around as much.

I've found that my rides on the Matterhorn vary. Sometimes it's only mildly annoying, and other times it hurts, it really hurts.

But without the ability to feel the seam between each piece of track, thrilling sending a painful zing up the spine and that really fun "thunk THUD" that turns my brain into jelly... it just wouldn't be the same.
At this point. I'm ok with them taking it down to the bones, and rebuilding it completely and as long as it looks PRETTY much the same (like a white mountain) they can add Anna and Elsa and Olaf and a broken Yeti and I'll be glad. Is this a real rumor, btw?

this is what I read...

"Matterhorn Upgrades: After a rather disastrous refurbishment in 2013 that saw the debut of uncomfortable new sleds made with shoddy materials, the original E Ticket attraction needs help. The Matterhorn will close in January for several months for another upgrade, focusing on new Abominable Snowman animatronics to replace the 1978 versions (the snowman’s name is Harold, as the Matterhorn Cast Members will be happy to tell you). New special effects and other cosmetic upgrades will also be installed throughout the mountain."

Where did you read?

Sounds similar to the MiceChat update I read last week.

I had to keep my sweatshirt tied around my waist and sit on it and use it to pad my back. It also helped to lean forward. My thirteen-year-old rode it three times in a row and had no complaints.

I'd say they copied that directly from the Mice Chat update.

Ah, youth. ;-)

It wasn't until my middle 30s that I began to wonder why this ride was suddenly so hard on my back and tailbone.

I saw it on Facebook. It looks great. The abominable snowman is a lot scarier looking. I like how you can see him behind the ice.

I am just hoping that they forgot to film it.
