All hail to my Disneyland cohorts. I have a query-
In your visits to the park, has anyone had the chance to examine or learn anything about Ariels tail? I have several pics and video shots of it but I am seeking more info-
I am planning to create a mermaid tail for halloween, using her tail as the model. Some of it is pretty straight forward, but the fin has some mystery for me. I have some ideas- but if anyone here has know-how or insight into the construction of that tail- I would be BEYOND thankful!!
Thanks in advance for any info or pics you can send me!:D

One thing I heard from CM friends is they tie her ankles together. This makes it look more realistic when she flaps her fin around. Not sure if that helps you at all, but an interesting fact nonetheless.

Isabel: Except the mermaids - it's the very place for mermaids
Kate: Who are only human beings downto the waist
Edith: And who can't be said strictly to set foot anywhere. Tails they may, but feet they cannot

You realize, of course, that if you make Ariel's tail like you see it.. you will be completely incapable of walking, as Ariel is
They have a hard under-fin with a looser outer fin of cloth. When she flips her tail you can see the under fin. The outer fin is much longer and uses loose fabric "scales". I don't think I have any digital pictures of it though.

From what I can make out of her tail during F! is that the body of the tail seems to be metallic lame fabric, and the fins a metallic tuille and chiffon mixture. I've seen a lot of appropriate fin fabrics on the bargain clearance racks at JoAnn's. :D
I'll try and get a closer look next time, and can let you know for sure. :)

If she can't walk, how does she get to the meet and greet? Forklift?

Ariel's Grotto is located between the front of Tomorrowland and the Castle. It's a rocky formation with a large "shell" inside. When it's time for Ariel's meet and greet, the shell rotates and out comes Ariel seated in the shell.
She doesn't have to walk or anything. Brilliant, eh?
Now didn't she have feet at the end of the movie?!

I thought it might be a harder fin under the fabric- I have picked up some great fabric, a deep green fabric for the body of the tail- it shimmers but is not sequined or something like that- then I picked up a fabric that shimmers from blue to green as it moves for the fin-
I work at a desk- I don't have to move much at all. I figure I can put it on when I get there and just wear it all day- I suppose I might slip out of it if I need to make a potty break or anything else-
The other hard part is figuring out the top- I think I will get a flesh-tone leotard and then make shells-
So the question becomes- how do I imitate the harder fin?
I knew she did not move- the shell turns, at Ariel's grotto she is pushed on a cart, and in the parade and Fantasmic she does not have to walk-
I look forward to hearing more from you guys!:D

One can always hope and pray that an Evil Sea Witch will change that bottom half! Gotta love a happy ending!!! :D
Off the top of my head I can't think of anything to make the "hard shell" out of, but I think a thin layer of foam might help give it shape and reduce the amount of leg shape that could be seen under the fabric. I'll keep thinking on it though. And if you don't have a leotard, you may be able to find a flesh colored tank top or camisole that might work better.

A few months ago, I went to Avalon Cove (Ariel's Grotto) in DCA and saw Ariel greeting young children. After I was seated & ordered the fish n chips, she was taken into the kitchen and never came out again. A short time later, my meal was served.
Hmm........:|

Note: I refuse to break ANY Disney Magic. So that being said:
1. Ariel is not only half fish, but she's also MARRIED remember?
2. At the end of the film(s) you'll notice that King Triton used his Trident to transform his daughter into a human (translation: legs) so that she could be with the man she loves. All Ariel has to do is request from her father to turn her back into a mermaid so she'll be more recognizable during the meet and greets. (however, she must like to be a human for WDW's Share a Dream Come True Parade, because that's the form she takes on there).
3. Ariel gets to her meet and greets in Disneyland by:
a- Triton Gardens (Disneyland). If you'll notice, Ariel's shell turns. So whenever she needs to go for a swim, or return from her swim, her character hosts/hostesses will hit a button (on onstage, one off) to let Flounder know that she's ready to go from onstage to backstage, whatever the case may be. Her oversized shell (not the other ones, for all you thinking funky thoughts!) is then turned by Flounder swimming underneath the ground by swimming so quickly, he causes an underground whirlpool, thus turning the shell on top of it.
b-Ariel's Grotto (DCA) Ariel uses the help of Charlie the Seahorse (and a character host/hostess) to go onstage/backstage. Basically, the host/hostess pushes or pulls a wheel-enhanced Charlie Seahorse around wherever Ariel needs to go.
