Per the FAA, a ground stop is in place at Los Angeles International Airport following a shooting incident at terminal 3. This is a domestic terminal which serves several airlines, including Virgin America and Jet Blue.

The ground stop affects all departing flights, as well as flights inbound from airports in the "western region," which basically covers airports in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.

The ground stop is currently in place through Noon, though it has already been extended several times, and is likely to be extended again. If you are flying out of LAX today, call your airline and see if there is an option to fly from another local airport. If you were expecting someone to arrive at LAX this afternoon, it will be almost impossible to pick them up due to total road closures leading to LAX.

Terminals 3 and 2 remain closed at this time. Terminal 2 serves Hawaiian Airlines, West Jet, Aero Mexico, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Air France, KLM and other international airlines.

Update: LA mayor Garcetti just said at a press conference that flights are taking off from terminals on the south side of LAX (terminals 5-8), and flights that were already inbound continue to land, again only on the south runways. LAX police state there was only one shooter, who is in custody.

Some inbound flights are being diverted to Ontario International Airport, and an LAX spokesperson said there will be "significant delays" to all inbound and outbound LAX flights for the remainder of the day.
