The “CALIFORNIA” letters previously located in the esplanade of the Disney California Adventure (http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneys-california-adventure/?int_cmp=SOC-intDPFY12Q2DLRDonatesCALIFORNIA30-05-12@0001) park entrance have found a new home! The Disneyland Resort (http://disneyland.disney.go.com/?int_cmp=SOC-intDPFY12Q2DLRDonatesCALIFORNIA30-05-12@0002) will donate the set of letters, which were removed to make way for the Disney California Adventure park expansion project, to the Friends of the California State Fair, a nonprofit organization that benefits California Exposition & State Fair (Cal Expo) in Sacramento. Cal Expo is the site of the California State Fair and hundreds of other events annually.

Plans are underway to make the letters an integral part of a new Cal Expo entrance. The “CALIFORNIA” letters will make their way to their new home sometime in late September and will be placed high enough at the entrance to be seen from Exposition Boulevard. They’ll continue to create memories at a fitting location as Disney California Adventure park welcomes Cars Land (http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneys-california-adventure/cars-land/?int_cmp=SOC-intDPFY12Q2DLRDonatesCALIFORNIA30-05-12@0003) and Buena Vista Street (http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/08/buena-vista-street-from-a-birds-eye-view/)!
The donation is the latest among several other Disney California Adventure park artifacts over the last five years, including:

The cab of the California Zephyr train that was formerly the home of Bur-r-r Bank Ice Cream and Bakers Field Bakery was donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum (http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/08/disneyland-resort-donates-california-zephyr-to-western-pacific-railroad-museum/) in Portola, Calif.
The sun icon that welcomed visitors to Sunshine Plaza was donated to the City of Anaheim for future use.
The giant toy train from EnginEARS Toys will be donated to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children’s) for future use.
Postcards and displays from the Greetings From California store at the main entrance of Disney California Adventure park were donated to many Southern California nonprofit organizations and educational facilities, including the Boys & Girls Club of Tustin, the Anaheim Family YMCA, the Child Abuse Services Team office in Orange, the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, and Betsy Ross and Orange Grove elementary schools in Anaheim.
Signs and character displays from Greetings From California were donated to Pretend City in Irvine.
The Reboundo Beach surfboard basketball game was donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Garden Grove.
Benches from throughout Disney California Adventure park were donated to the City of Anaheim for use in public spaces.

I am really glad to see the CALIFORNIA letters got a new home, and I'm especially happy to read the longer list of donations of props and icons from DCA. I knew about the donation to CHOC, but some of these others were new to me.

Thank you for this post, very informative. I am sure that 50 years from now Alex Trebek will have that as a category "where is it now"

I saw the link in the news earlier, and got all giddy that a piece (or pieces) are moving soooo much closer to me. The other article didn't show the drawing, so it is nice to know we will even be able to see them driving by. If someone else is driving we may be able to see them from the freeway.

The Sac Bee article says they won't be installed until September anyway. ;)

Good to see these things not ending up in a landfill.

I bet the new owners will get a lot of use out of them.

Way to go Disney

I am so happy about this. I live in Sacramento and of course love going to the State Fair. Next year I will take my picture in front of the letters once again! :D:D:D

I want to know if they sent the candy striped fronts as well. :p That would be awesome.

I liked the rainbow-color fronts (one color per letter) they put on for the World of Color opening. I'm so glad I took the time to take pictures of DD in front of all the letters -- both plain and colorful (though we never got the candy cane ones for some reason).

I love that so many little (and not-so-little) items have been donated to other venues rather than being thrown away.

Oh, I absolutely love the whole donation thing. I'm just giddy the letters will be so much closer. (Still roughly an hour, but that is closer than 8.;))

Anybody know if the tile mural survived the refurb? I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I always thought it looked kinda cool.
