I happened to be in Disney's California Adventure last night around park closing, and got a chance to watch as the technicians prepared the World of Color platform for that evening's test run. This testing happens almost nightly, but it's the first chance I've had to see it and I wanted to share some photos.

We didn't get to see any testing of the actual show elements, but got to watch as they lowered the show platform, did some quick tests of the various fountains, and performer an alignment of the front/center projectors. The images you'll see on the water screens did not appear to be actual show film, but a test pattern or screen saver.

DCA was scheduled to close at 8 last night, but park hours for all but the Paradise Pier section were extended to 9, which put some pressure on the testing schedule. While we were snapping the last few photos, a handful of Disney folks - including World of Color show producer Sayre Wiseman - came over to politely shoo us out of Paradise Pier so they could get on with the real test. Click on any image below to open a MUCH larger version - enjoy!

The West and Center sections of the platform are in the "show" position, the East (closest to the camera) section is still at the "maintenance" level.

Fountain test. Notice the show lights to the right are up and lit. These are the lights that appear to be encased in clear bubbles.

We've moved to a new vantage point next to Ariel's Grotto. West and Center sections are underwater; East section still on surface.

Most of the fountains are spraying straight up, but some are spraying forward or to the side. Not sure of this is intentional, but a pair of technicians eventually took a boat out to the platform and appeared to be making adjustments to some of the nozzles.

Testing another set of fountains, and you can see another nozzle is aimed right at the viewing area.

Some of these fountains can shoot water higher than the top of the Sun Wheel.

Testing the front/center mist screen. The spotlights are still on at this point.

A closer look at the center section at "show level."

Starting to test the rear projectors; spotlights are still on.

The spotlights were turned off, and the intensity of the image on the mist screen is much stronger.

Look closely at the bottom of the mist screen (click the image to enlarge) and you'll see alignment lines.

Meanwhile, the East platform has dropped to show level, and the fountains are quickly tested.

One of the "screen savers" used to test the projector alignment.

One last photo before we're ushered out of the area so the real work can begin.

Me too!! Our APs expires May 16th. Unfortunately, the only weekend I can visit DL is the weekend of April 24th. I am keeping my fingers crossed World of Color truly opens that date!

Mine expires May 12th. :crying: Hope I can get to the park before than. We went alot in 09 though. So if I don't make it before than I hope to go back in October or November.

Any rumored start dates?Disney is keeping completely mum on the topic, to the point that they won't even give us an estimated date range for the opening press event. That said...

Looking at nothing but construction calendars and entertainment schedules and crystal balls and tea leaves, DEP leaves DCA on April 18th, so I have to believe World of Color won't open any earlier than that. There will supposedly be CM previews (and the rumor is there will be a D23 preview but NOT an AP preview), which could either happen during the weird 2-day window during which DEP won't be performed (April 12 & 13), or after DEP leaves (April 19th on...)

Either way, the earliest I'd expect to see a public performance would be April 23rd, but I've also heard April 30th. From a PR standpoint, it makes more sense for Disney to wait until the latter weekend, because they could focus on not only World of Color, but the reopening of the Orange Stinger/Silly Symphony Swings, and the newly refurbished Golden Vine Winery / Wine Country Trattoria. I've already heard that World of Color is going to be a HUGE media event, so they are going to want as much to talk about as possible.

At D23, they said early summer 2010, but it appears they are ahead of schedule...April would be awesome as my family is planning a trip around the same time...

Well, a source who has been pretty reliable told MousePlanet that June 1, 2010 is the target opening date for World of Color.

Now to wait and see...

That "early summer" date was given during two separate presentations during the D23 Expo...But that was in September 2009, so the schedule surely could have changed since then...

Boo for June! I had read the 26th of April and thought I may be able to catch it in May. We will be back in July but then it will be summer crowds!

Oh yikes...we're getting there on June first or second. I was really hoping WoC would have been going for a few weeks so that they'd have some idea of how to deal with the crowds. This could be very interesting.

I'm still hoping that when I call for Fantasmic! priority seating maybe, just maybe, they'll have an option for WoC...please?!?!?!

many times it seems Disney considers June through Sep as summer. not may. I guess June 1st is still "early summer".

Well, technically, summer doesn't start until June 21st...

I think Disney is confused too. They said Spring 2010 and now it is summer 2010? Or wait...June is still technically Spring.

yeah - and in So Cal that day comes and goes and no one knows the difference... although it is the last day of school for Irvine Unified.

Food and Wine runs until Memorial Day so they may be waiting to see what kind of crowds they get for that before committing a date for World of Color. Also, after the Fantasmic! problems last year they probably want to be certain that the show is rock solid before they promote it heavily.

I've got the 23rd on all my calendars. Though they're trying to add in at least 4 furlough days and that all might change.
