What determines which weekday hours will be 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and others will be 9 a.m. to 9 a.m.?

Simple, expected crowd size for the most part.

On occasion, a special event, such as the Solar Power Private Party on Tuesday, October 27th will have the park closer earlier than what the current crowd size is expected to handle (9 AM to 6 PM on the 27th), but for the most part, Disneyland based its hours on expected crowds.

On our trip last week Disneyland was scheduled to close at 8 pm. Two of those nights an announcement was made over loud speakers that the park would stay open until 9 pm. They must have had more attendance those days then expected. (lucky us!)

With the addition of the Halloween Screams fireworks and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, Halloween Time has proven very popular this year. If you check out the calendar at Disneyland.com, you'll see there are way more days then ever where Disneyland is open until 9, 10 or even 11pm during the week (not counting Fridays). This used to be unheard of just a couple years ago.
