Anaheim, CA is set to become the home to an all new eco-friendly high-speed rail station which will ultimately link with Disneyland theme parks.

The project, named ARTIC, (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center), will become a symbol for the city’s increased efforts to provide eco friendly transportation and alternative energy options.

ARTIC will cost a total of $180 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2013. Construction on the railway system will begin sometime early next year, although the start date is dependent upon funding from the federal government.

Plans have been revealed for a major new transport hub in downtown Anaheim. The project, known as ARTIC, (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center), will be designed to meet LEED platinum certification and to become a new icon for the city.

The $180m project will become the hub for Amtrak rail and regional Metrolink services, as well as local buses, airport shuttles, taxis and connections with Disney's monorail system. In later phases of the project, the building will become the area's main high-speed rail station, linking north and south California.

The winning designers for the project were announced this month as HOK, an architectural firm known for their sustainable designs. The plans were inspired by iconic stations such as New York's Grand Central Station, and feature a column free design that will draw visitor's eyes up to the 150ft high ceiling.

ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) will be an iconic, timeless transportation facility where people will seamlessly move between transit services to reach Southern California activity centers and business districts. Transit oriented development in the immediate area will integrate with ARTIC to form a vibrant Southern California community. For more information, see the ARTIC Fact Sheet.

A Growing Community
With a population of more than 3 million, Orange County is the second largest county in California and the fifth largest county in the nation. Population is expected to continue to grow in the coming decades with a population of 3.7 million expected by 2040. The city of Anaheim is California's 10th largest city with nearly 350,000 residents and is in the heart of the county. ARTIC will serve this growing community--now and into the future.

Interesting! That will basically confirm that the monorail will be extended out?

Where is this "central" hub going to be? I guess the best location will be down Katella Ave where the deserted Platinum Project was supposed to be, on the right hand side of the street between the 5 freeway and Anaheim Stadium?

It would be nice to see a map of the purposed route.

It could also be built as an extension of the existing Amtrak station at Anaheim Stadium.

Interesting! That will basically confirm that the monorail will be extended out?I don't think so. I've gone bleary-eyed reading the public documents, and, while the plans call for a "fixed guideway" connection to the Disneyland Resort, I don't actually see anything that confirms a Monorail extention. In fact, looking at the notes (http://www.anaheimfixedguideway.com/pdf/Anaheim_Fixed-Guideway-Boards.pdf) from April meeting, they are considering many different alternatives, only one of which is a Monorail. (And even if they did build one, it wouldn't necessarily be a Disney Monorail...) A fixed guideway can be anything that runs on a dedicated track or lane, to include bus service. For the purposes of Federal transportation funding, the existing ART system qualifies as a fixed guideway.

It would be nice to see a map of the purposed route.Click here (http://www.anaheimfixedguideway.com/pdf/Anaheim_Fixed-Guideway-Boards.pdf), look at pages 14-16. That shows the proposed routes for the 12 alternative routes currently under consideration.

Ah!
So they are going to put the new center between Anaheim Stadium and Honda Center/Arrowhead Pond!
That places the center in a pragmatic compromise between the two venues. People going to the annual circus, or to a pop concert, at the Honda Center, can ride AMTRAK./METRO there.
That is one-block better than using the present Anaheim Stadium parking lot's AMTRAK/METRO station.

For the southern businesses and hotels this would be great if the tourists were to use such a system. My friend was able to stay at a cheap hotel because of ART. I think they will go with Buses as those do not take up space like an electric rail line plus there is little construction needed for buses. I cannot wait to see how this works.
