While leaving the park tonight, we noticed a new toy that Disney has available. It's one of those spinnie toys, which they have a ton of different styles for, but I never thought they'd make one that basically has Minnie's dress spinning up so you can see beneath it.

It's not overly crude or salacious, but I really just think someone didn't think this particular product through.

I took a little video of the product, and the only way I've gotten the video to work is having it on my blog, so I'm sending you there if you're interested in seeing the video. You can ignore the text of the post - it's mostly just an intro like the one in this post.

Here's the link to see the video. (http://tinyurl.com/me5tyn)

Oooooo, bad idea!! What were they thinking? It's not like it's horribly offensive, but it sure is a poor choice.

IDK...I think they're cute. They've been selling them for about a year now in WDW and they're quite popular. I think it's a fun idea...

Good grief.. I don't think it's a big deal at all. It does not even look like Minnie is wearing her traditional bloomers under there. I saw a Cinderella one before where she also spun her dress around. I guess when performers do this in some shows, it's also bad show???

This is an outrage and I can not believe that Disney would stoop to this level of borderline pornographic material to make money from. I’m forced to cover my sons eyes every time I walk by this display or try to avoid it completely. I’m thankful for other like minded good Christian parents who have a problem with this product as well.

I think you're missing the point. It's the image, you see. Some of us prefer that our girls not continue to be subjected to the same stupid portrayals of females. It's the whole naughty-girl thing I object to and would rather not have foisted onto my girls. I don't find it cute, I find it demeaning in a very subtle way. But then, I'm one of those oddballs that disliked the "Glam Makeovers" and was not sorry to see that store (forget the name--the one near the entrance to GCH in DTD) disappear. You know, the one where they had to have cops patrol regularly as there were a number of registered sex offenders who hung out right in front.

Sure, it's a small thing and not something I'd go militant over, but it's just that we have so many of these small things that cumulatively end up causing damage.

As for Disney stooping to that level...okay, I recognize the sarcasm, but Disney is not exactly the acme of social consciousness when it comes to gender role portrayals. Again, nothing I'm militant about but the shows they have for kids (other than Playhouse Disney) are pretty pathetic unless you really enjoy watching spoiled, stupid, self-absorbed and obnoxious kids win the day, usually in a hip outfit.

ETA: Just thought I'd mention that I fall extremely far from your stereotype.

Lol I hope so, the toy actually looked rather boring, can't imagine it would
hold anyones imagination long anyway.... not a very well thought out toy.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think this was a thread for trolls. Really? You see Minnie's little lace trimmed bloomers all the time, I honestly don't see the difference in this toy.

I've got more Princess toys than I can count that reveal the character's underwear in the course of normal play. What makes this one any different from the others? I'd be more likely to say something if it were an anatomically correct character in all their birth day glory!

What they said. I tried to trim down DizMe's post but there were too many points in there to do it. ;)

It's not horribly offensive - but I wouldn't want to buy it for any girls I know. I think if Minnie were dressed like a ballerina it could be cute.

And, btw, DizMe, I'm not so sure that the Glammed up girly thing is entirely gone - some of the pictures I've seen out of Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique make me wonder. Although I'm not sure they're as trampy as Libby Lu got.

Not the smartest idea for a toy, but I don't think it's that bad. I think it's kind of lame, but I'm a mom to two boys, so what do I know about spinning doll toys anyhow.

It's not nearly as bad as naked Barbie and Ken. ;)

Did I miss something? Did they start selling naked Barbie and Ken without clothes?

No, they don't SELL them like that, but that's how they always end up. I remember playing with Barbies and you end up losing a bunch of the clothes and they just end up naked. I didn't care and my sisters didn't care that they didn't have clothes. We still played with them just the same. It didn't make any difference. Any my sisters and I don't go running around naked just cause we played with naked toys. So I'm pretty sure that little girls who see Minnie with her skirt flying up aren't going to run around and make their skirts fly up. Just my opinion.

Um I would have to say that all those spinning toys that are sold with Disney's logo, characters, and likeness to anything Disney are annoying and a complete waste of money. Spend you money on something more useful and educational.

Nothing funnier yet more saddening than seeing a kid spinning one of those things and next thing you know they are crying because it hit them in the face! Don't spend your money on junk that ends up in a landfill in about a year!

Yup. naked barbies didnt care... i dont run around naked either.....
Well i use to love to spin around and make my dress fly up. it looked SO PRETTY!...
But just do what my mom did, she would make use wear Lycra type shorts under our skirts. And i kept doing that well into my high school years.

Anyways Minnie always shows her underwear! Why is this any
diffrent?

I must be doing somethign wrong. No Barbies, no spinning Minnies and my 7 year old still thinks it is hilarious to run around the house naked.

Can't you see Minnie's bloomers in almost every Minnie toy out there? I know the stuffed Minnie in my room has a short skirt on- I don't see the difference with this new toy.

I have 2 DD's and IMHO if you don't make a big deal out of it then neither will your kids. They just want a toy. Most kids won't see it as a chance to see under Minnies skirt.

Now if Minnie was wearing a thong and had "I Love Mickey" tattooed on a butt cheek I would question their intentions!

If it isn't a big seller it certainly won't be around for very long don't worry.

No, they don't SELL them like that, but that's how they always end up.
One of the columns in a compilation of newspaper columns done post Katrina by a writer who has a weekly or twice-weekly column in the local paper was on this very subject. Kids were far away from home, Dad came in every once in a while to get the house back in order and deal with work stuff, and asked the kids 'what did they want' from the house. Girls wanted their Barbies, but they're all naked and Dad tries to dress them (with big Dad hands and little bitty Barbie clothes) and is concerned about what TSA will say as he goes through security with all these naked dolls!

When I was a young teen I had a Minnie T-shirt that had a front view on the fron, and a back view on the back, showing a patch on her bloomers.

Though I do think this would be 'better' if Minnie was dressed as a ballerina.
