I love Fantasmic too! It's one of the most creative and innovative things ever! My favorite parts are the beginning with Mickey, the segment with Belle, SW, and Ariel, the Mark Twain and finale with Sorcery Mickey. This show is truly awe inspiring. Here's a question, what are the differences in Fantasmic shows in FL and CA. I know one is instead of Peter Pan they have Pocahontas.

My favorite part had always been the end where all the characters are waving to you as the Mark Twain? goes by. This last time they were just on Tom Sawyers island and it didnt seem the same. If the big wigs at Disney would ever spend some money on maintenece their boats would be operational and they could run the show like it used to be.:(

Yeah, but it's not on the RoA in the Magic Kingdom - Instead, it's at the MGM Studios, in a huge amphitheatre built just for Fantasmic!

The show in Florida has several main differences:

The show is done in a specially built ampitheater with bench seating for several thousand people.

The island in the center area was built for the show and is not a "natural island" like Tom Sawer Island at DL.

There are many more villians in the filmed montage segment that is projected on the water screens.

The snake is not used in the opening sequence. Instead a Jafar turns into a Giant Cobra later in the show. The Cobra is built along the same lines as the snake in Calif except it rears up and spreads it's Cobra Wings.

No Peter Pan, instead a very lengthy sequence with the characters from Pochantas, climbings the mountain, swinging from the mountain, etc.

Barges are slightly different. No Urusla infaltable.

Steamboat Willie's boat at the end was built specially for the show and looks very cartoony and is closer looking to the little boat in the cartoon.

The Dragon comes straight out of the mountain intsead of up thru the floor. It is just as big and blows a huge plume of fire to set the river on fire.

Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentace appears on the very tip top of the mountain (as the is no house on this island) and the fireworks are not as many nor as high as the ones in Calif.

At the very begiining there are some of the stilt/puppet like animals used in the Lion King Segment, which is new to the show.

Unfortuantly, if you are very familier with the California version (and the original version of course) you will notice that the soundtrack is the same, with new musical segments added/spliced into it and it is rather noticable to anyone familer with the original soundtack. In some segments, the splicing is very noticabel.

The show runs a full 1/2 hour in Florida. In California it is 24 1/2 minutes long.

The theater in Florida is at MGM/Disney Studios, not The Magic Kingdom.

Hope this answeres your questions about the differences between the two shows. I have both on Video Tape. Not the "Official" park tapes but tapes I shot at DL and a freind shot for me at WDW,

Yes, it does. I feel that Disneyland puts on far better shows that any in WDW.

Beauty and the Beast: In DL we got the ful show with a magical transformation at the end.
In Florida - a few dances and all out of sequence on a Hollywood Bowl like stage.

Pohcantas. I can't even list the differences. The Florida show was awful. The DL show made me cry.

Festival Of Fools at DL was a huge theater in the round performance. In Florida it was inside, and used a lot of puppets and things. A good show, but no comparison.

And I am sorry, but this new Walt Disney 100th Birthday Parade with those plastice looking, hot, uncofomforatble looking snow globes just is too phoney to talk about. The Lion King Parade here just took my breath away.

My favorite parts, are pretty much all of Mickey's entrances and his big exit at the end, but if I had to pick one, I'd say the very beginning of the show when there's that feedback-like sound and all of a sudden, all the lights go off, and the spots in the center go on all at the same time with the music. It just has that theatrical impact that I so love. Frankly all Mickey's entrances are like that, not done necessarily with fanfare, but always with style, and sometimes an element of surprise, as you go through the show, it stays fresh. You can't beat that!

For me, the MGM Fantasmic did not have the magic that DL's has. Pretty much for the all the reasons Lost Boy said, the splicing of the soundtrack which does not "flow," the different show elements like the Pocahontus scene, and the finale fireworks, which were rather tame compared to DL. (They shot them off behind the island which didnt provide that up-close, in the action feeling.

Overall, Disneyland's is so much better and much more magical!!

My favorite part is the monkeys and the snake. I love those drums, and the dancing is fairly good, although admittedly simplistic(you would be too in those costumes!).

The worst part about WDW is the Mark Twain mock up. The thing looks like it can barely float. I think they were trying to make it look cartoonish or something, but it just looks super cheap. I don't think I'd want to be on it, and I definitely wouldn't want to be on it jumping around in a character suit.

Also, the Disneyland and WDW shows share a very common element: *LONG* wait for decent seats. At least at WDW, the seating is closed off a couple hours before the show, so for premium seats you only need to wait a couple of hours. Disneyland is usually a good 3 1/2 hours for the best seats, and that ground is hard on the butt after that long of a wait.

Couldn't agree with you more Malecifent! I really like the seats in WDW and I am a youngster! Those cobbles in Rivers of America are hard on the rear. :)

One thing about WDW Fantasmic! seating is the ability to get "priority seating" without having to shell out big buckslike at DL. When I was there a couple of years ago at the Christmas holiday, you could get priority seating if you ate dinner at the Brown Derby before the show. We just asked the waiter and he gave us passes. We were over to the side a bit, not directly in the center, but right in front of a water screen and we only had to show up about 1/2 hour before show time. It gave us more time to see other things and since we were already planning to eat dinner at the Brown Derby, we didn't spend any more money than we had already budgeted.

Can't say which I like better, as I've seen the one in CA multiple times and FL only once. I really like the snake with the headlight eyes and when Malificent turns into the dragon. It always amazes me how they get that big thing out on the island. Enough of my rant. BTW, I'm new and have intro'd myself in the Lounge for those who care to look. :)

My favorite part is Peter Pan. By far. The segment is well directed and well paced.
Seeing Peter Pan stand there laughing at the tip-top at the end w/ his own spotlight gives me chills. I love that!

Hey, everybody!

Overall, I'll always prefer DL's Fantasmic over MGM's. Sure, MGM's is about 5 minutes longer, and the seating is much more comfortable, but I love the spontaneous atmosphere around the Rivers of America. No fussing about getting a seat in the Mickey section there. It's just pick a spot and stake it out. That's what I enjoy about watching Illuminations at Epcot -- that whole ordeal in getting a good spot always pays off in the end.

When you split each show into 2 halves -- let's say the halfway point is the introduction of the Evil Queen and her Magic Mirror -- I think my preferences do a bit of flip-flopping. For me, the first half of DL's Fantasmic beats MGM's first half. The Pocahontas scene in MGM goes on way too long, and the elaborate work in setting up that scene is the main reason for the ridiculously lenghty animation sequence with the characters floating by in water bubbles. And besides, is there any justifiable excuse for replacing Peter Pan and Pinocchio with Pocahontas? Whoa, alliteration... but I digress. In a nutshell, DL's first half has so much more live performances going on when compared to MGM's over-reliance on the mist screens.

However, I gotta say that the second half of MGM's Fantasmic is infinitely superior to DL's second half. For starters, you have the larger roster of villains for Mickey to overcome. Sure, Hades kills the pacing, but Jafar's role in the show absolutely kicks butt. You get one more Mickey costume (classic Mickey) during the snake sequence than DL's show has. And, best of all, Mickey's battle with Maleficent's dragon form is greatly enhanced in the MGM show. In DL, after Mickey delivers his "...but this is MY dream!" line, he immediately draws the sword and slays the dragon. As the dragon dies, the flames flicker out on the Rivers of America. In the MGM show, however, it's much better played out. First, Mickey says his line, then he marches down to three points on the edge of the shore. At each stop, he "magically" raises the water fountains and uses them to extinguish the flames. Then, when he draws the sword, the dragon and the entire mountain itself is surrounded by this spectacular water curtain that I never thought I'd see anywhere other than the Bellagio Hotel & Casino. The only aspect of MGM's second half that pales in comparison to DL's is the boat during the finale. For me, the difference in the fireworks is more or less insignificant.
