I was at DCA earlier tonight and saw a "bomb sniffing" dog at work walking along the outside of Golden Dreams and then again on the other side of the road sniffing by Golden Zephyr, Jumping Jellyfish, etc.

His handler was wearing a white Disney polo shirt, and they were followed by a shirt and tie gentleman with name tag and a black walkie talkie.

Is this a common thing these days, or was there perhaps something suspicious the dog was trying to sniff out? Just curious since I hadn't seen it before.

I was at DCA this afternoon for the AP Toy Story sneak peek and saw a dog and handler in Sunshine Plaza.

I never saw one before but figured maybe I just hadn't noticed.

Yep, I've seen the dog before. I couldn't tell you exactly when but I've seen it before - I know I've seen it in the Esplanade but I don't remember where else.

Ive seen em all over the place. Ive even seen them be up in the planter in front of the train station on Main Street. They are there for that extra layer of security for such a public place.

And, yes, people do stupid things like leave stuff "hidden" in a planter rather than pay for a locker. Better we be actively looking for such things, even if they are harmless, than to wait till after something actually does happen because of such a thing.

I see them all the time as well. Any time a bag is left abandoned, we call it in to security and the dog comes out. It would happen a lot at IASW where people would leave bags without strollers in the stroller parking area.

Well, that's nice to know!

They just leave their bags there? That seems really odd, to me - especially since IASW isn't exactly a wild ride that they should be afraid of things falling out!

Disneyland has a large K9 (a.k.a. "Pluto") unit. They used to take the dogs to the vet next to my office, and I see them at the park frequently along with the APD unit.

I was there yesterday too with this dog and we watched a man get arrested for a pot pipe. The dog was able to smell it on him and undercover officers arrested him. My BF and I saw the whole thing as we were waiting for the tram to go home.

We saw them last month too. Outside Haunted Mansion there were a couple of bags left unattended, and a couple of CM's had the area blocked off (where the FP station is/was for HM) until the dog could come and check them out.

We see them quite often. Their dog will see our dog usually. They've been around for at least 5-6 years that I've seen.

We pretty much see them every time were there. Usually somewhere crowded. It's a great opportunity to teach the kids about service animals and about manners. They always want to pet the puppy!

Not to hijack the thread, but I brought my guide dog puppy to the park on Monday for the TSMM preview. At a little over five months, he's really quite young, so we limited our time to a few hours. He was wonderfully behaved! He was not bothered by all of the noise and new activity and was not distracted by the crowds of people. He was very calm on the tram and on the TSMM ride, lying down calmly at my feet.

I was very impressed with the response we received from everyone we encountered, CM's and guests alike. Many people had questions, but all were very respectful. Yes, kids wanted to pet the puppy, but parents explained about the dog and everyone asked. When the puppy was calm and lying down, he was very approachable and with permission, several kids pet him and said hello.

The only difficulty I ran into was the dog's sensitivity to the hot pavement on his feet. He often pulled to reach shade. Poor puppy:(

Having a guide dog puppy is a great conversation starter, and I'm always pleased to answer questions that people have. Who can resist the appeal of a cute puppy, but it's great to see the awareness of many as to how to behave around a service animal. I hope the exposure to a service animal in a public place teaches kids (and adults too) how they benefit the clients that they serve.

We were at California Adventure on Monday. After coming out of the last Playhouse Disney show of the day and getting our strollers, we saw the dog being walked through the rest of the parked strollers and sniffing the baskets. We were trying to figure out if they were sniffing for bombs or drugs left in the stroller baskets.

Disneyland security cannot arrest anyone, other than a citizen's arrest if they catch you in the act of a crime. They can escort you off the property.

Possessing a pipe that smells as though it at one time contained marijuana is not a crime.

But they do have Anaheim PD on site, too, and they can hold you for the PD to arrive.

Especially, you'd think, in California. Having a used pipe could constitute "probable cause" for a stop-and-search, which is my guess as to what happened.

Poor puppy:(Since we both know you don't want them to learn that behavior, Muttluks work wonders. MDM teaches all our pups to walk in them. It is often a riot to watch them the first few times til they get used to them. Be prepared for the "Look at the dog with shoes!!"

When we have seen them, they have been Anaheim PD with Anaheim K-9s. Often you will see the truck/trailer on the left side of the Disneyland entrance and it also has the APD logos.

I've heard of them, but I'll check with Guide Dogs of America. I seem to recall that in one of our meetings they discouraged the use of them. It probably has to do with the ability of a blind person to put them on and take them off the dog. I'll see what they have to say. Thanks for mentioning them!

At the hospital I work for we have almost K-9 only. Its really cool the way the dogs are respected around there. When patients begin to act up or their families start to the dog comes out and it tends to get people to chill fast. Not saying they are mean but the stuff I know they are capable of it just scary to me!!

One of the K-9 security is also a huge DL fan, when he was on his honeymoon WDW tried hard to get him to stay to be on their unit. For guests of the park, when you see that dog its more of an extra security blanket than anything. Its easier to do a simple command and have a "bad guy" taken down fast than have a heated take down. I am glad they have the K-9 units in the park.

I was just going to ask if they didn't have some sort of doggie shoes! When we were there it was only 88. I can't imagine how horrible it would be if you had to go out with your service dog, and it was in the 100's!

my mom was just telling me about the doggie shoes. Her dog wears them because they live in Phoenix. I thought they were cool. I love watching K9 units work.
