    DL Park Earthquake Procedures

I have been reading some articles about the recent earthquake that affected DL. My DH and I vist DL only once a year and we both have no practical experience with earthquakes. What does DL do when that happens? What, as a guest, should I do? Does everyone head toward the hub to be away from buildings? As you can see, I would be clueless as to what to do.

Can someone here enlighten me so I can be helpful to Disney and do the right thing if that were to happen on my trip?

    Thanks!

There was an earthquake while we were there last May, around 8 at night I believe. Half of our party didn't feel it, half did. The park closes all rides down and then reopens them after each one is reinspected. We were near ToT when the quake hit and then walked over to Screamin' to wait for it to reopen, which took about 30 minutes. Some rides didn't reopen, but most of the major ones did minus ToT.

Edit to add- I should have said most of the rides in DCA reopend. Several of the DL rides remained closed since it was close to closing time I guess, we crossed over but the gate CM told us about the closures so we went back to the hotel after DCA closed. There were no annoucements, but CMs where informing people that an earthquake had happened and we were told to just wait if we wanted to. You couldn't get in line for any ride, but no other areas became restricted to us.

Disneyland takes the rides down and inspects for damage. This also goes for buildings so you would be escorted out of the shops until an inspection is made. Buildings generally reopen shortly thereafter. If possible, extra characters are brought out to "entertain" while people wait (like happened last weekend.) Disneyland doesn't sit on a major fault, so I wouldn't expect major damage. Also, California is built for earthquakes. Just like Florida knows how to handle a hurricane, California knows what to do for earthquakes.

*IF* a quake should happen, realize it may take some time to get everything reopened, and either relax back at your room or enjoy what is available in the park.

I agree with Mal. Just enjoy the park without the rides. It can give you alot of time in the park to just wander around, and enjoy the sights you normally dont look at. Also if most people dont normally wanna wait you might get short lines when they do reopen rides.

We were there then too! We didn't feel it either but it happened while we were on the Matterhorn. We went to BTMR next & it was down which didn't surprise us. When we got to the closed POTC then we asked what was going on. We just waited for rides to open up again.

My Mom was the first to say she felt it and I told her she was crazy! haha But then we started getting texts from friends asking if we were ok because they heard about a SoCal earthquake. We ended up riding Screamin' 4 times in a row because there no line after it opened back up.

Thanks so much for the information. I think that DH and I would wander around the park and look at things or grab a bite to eat at DTD. And if alot of people were leaving we would definitely wait it out in hopes of shorter lines.

And I just loved that analogy about California is prepared for earthquakes like Florida is for hurricanes. Now that I understand!

    Thanks everyone!

That's a good idea. We waited it out and were 1st on HM when it opened back up because so many people gave up.

Ditto! It was early May. We were on Haunted Mansion and didn't feel a thing. We hung out and waited for the fireworks.

We were also there for a bigger one about 11 yrs ago that happened in the middle of the night. It woke us up for sure. My sis was staying at DL hotel and they were evacuated due to cracks up the side of the building. They were moved to the Paradise pier conference rooms ( i think pan pacific at the time) and were given snacks etc. until it could be inspected and found safe. DLR knows what they are doing and seem to be pretty well prepared for these situations.

We were there last May as well, and were on Splash Mountain when the quake happened, and had no idea. We had quite a wait before we were evacuated from the ride, and then just hung around till everything reopened.

We are heading there at the end of this month, and meeting family from Texas who are now terrified after the Baja quake..
