I was asleep. My wife, who left early to go to work, called me and told me to turn on the TV. This was about 8:15 pacific time.
Since then I've had my little portable TV with me the whole day.

My alarm goes off at 5:40 am...I turn on the tv to wake me up and start listening to the weather and news. The first plane had not hit the WTC yet, as I remember listening to local news. As soon as the news break came on, I sat up and watched....and watched, and watched. I happened to see live the 2nd plane hit the WTC...and both collapse of buildings, live.
I felt disjointed and disbelief. That this was almost surreal...and I was watching a movie, not live news. I didn't want to come into work today. It was hard leaving my kids...and not being able to see the tv and watch what was happening. I've had the radio on all day, listening, but it just dosn't seem the same. Other people at work have felt like me. It's hard to work. This is so all consuming right now, that this stuff we are working on seems trivial at the moment. I have felt "off-kilter" all day....and can't wait to leave to go home. I know I'll probably leave early. My husband was sent home from work early this morning. He works on Military ships when they come into some ports for repairs. The government didn't want non-military people on the ships today. I don't know about tomorrow.

I mentioned this earlier in the paranormal thread...
I had the weirdest dream about about a plane crashing into my apartment building(I dont live in a apartment...). The dream was so wierd that it actually didnt make a lot of sense. So I woke up and couldnt go back to sleep, I turned on the TV to see that second plane hitting the WTC.
I talked to me friends all day, and everyone was in shock...still What a day...

My mom woke me up 7:13, My sister had called her from Ft. Lewis, WA. My Brother-In-Law in in the Army, he is in New York right now. The truck he was in was near the WTC, some of the other guys there took pictures of the plane crashing into the building. Last thing my sister heard was that thay gave he just got to their hotel and were figuring out what was going on, and what to do.
After about 10 minutes the fact that a terrorist act just happend in the US hit me. I realized how many people had just died when I was watching the collapse of both WTC buildings. The feeling i got in my stomach was almost familiar, when i found out about the OC bombing. for the next few hours I kept trying to grasp the amout of human beings that had just passed. what now.......

My wife called me from her cellphone while she was driving to work this morning asking if we knew anyone that was supposed to be travelling today. She hadn't heard any real details at that point except that the FAA had grounded all flights. I then turned on the television and learned the details. It was shortly after I had turned on the TV that I saw the towers collapse live.
Even before I had heard enough to have any idea what was going on, I was quickly aware of the magnitude of the story by the level of shock and horror conveyed by Dan Rather's voice. -Jeff |

My sister called me very upset at about 7:10. We knew our father was on a business trip and that the chances were very good that he was in one of the buildings that had been attacked.
Once I turned on the TV I was numb except for a horrible horrible pit in my stomach. He won't tell me if he was or not in the building or not. (I think he was based on other things he said.) But he's safe now. The phone call from my mother telling me he was ok was the greatest I ever received. To say I felt a release of fear is an understatement. I think that because my dad was so close to the situation but survived, I've felt a sense of miracle and optimism. I know this is a terrible thing, but I have a grateful heart tonight. We have no idea how or when he'll make it home, but he's ok! Adrienne K

Adrienne -
Im so happy that you found he's ok!! That had to be a huge relief. Prayers continue for everyone on these boards who might know people affected and of course to everyone in our country, as we mourn and look ahead to an uncertain future.

Adrienne - I'm glad your dad is safe. I can't imagine how you must have felt before you got that good news.
We turned on the radio to Mark and Brian like we do every morning. It was 6:16. They were talking in these somber tones about the World Trade Center. I thought to myself that this particular bit wasn't very funny and kept waiting for them to stop. It took about 5 minutes and a comment from their news person to make us realize that they weren't kidding. We turned the TV on at about 6:40 and watched the World Trade Center engulfed in flames and spewing black smoke like a chimney stack. We watched in absolute horror as the first tower collapsed and then the second tower collapsed. I've been watching all day, hearing one horrible detail after another, trying to take sollace in the good outcomes I've heard. /cs |

First I want to say to AK that I am glad your dad is ok, and that my prayers go out to the victims and families in NYC, Wash, DC., LA, The Bay Area, and anyone else who lost loved ones.
At 6:50 (mountian time) this morning, I was sitting in front of the computer reading this morning's MP update and watching the morning news. The news break came on and Bryant Gumble was talking about a plan crashing into the WTC. I looked over to see the top of the first tower in flames. CBS went to a telephone interview with an eyewitness when the second plane flew into tower 2 on live tv. I was totally stunned, but for me the most sickning part was watching the towers collapse. I just kept imagining be trapped in the upper floors when they start to fall. I just hope we find out soon who is responsible, and I think the old Mr. T line says it all, "I pity da fool" Last edited by disneyhead; 09-11-2001 at 09:26 PM. |

I heard while I was on the freeway on my way to work. The fact that I work across the street from a federal building didn't thrill me to much

Adrienne, I'm so glad that your father is safe! I can't imagine what you must have been going through this morning, but it is good to hear that the conclusion was a positive one.
To anyone else out there that has friends or family that are directly affected by all of this, my thoughts and prayers are definitely with you. -Jeff |

Thanks to all of you for your kind responses.
I also wanted to say that while my attitude is grateful, I am, of course, keeping the victims and their families close to my heart in prayer. Adrienne K

I had just gotten the kids off to the school bus at about 6:30 mountain time. Tuned into GMA like I always do. We are on satelite here and our network news comes from either NY or LA. Saw the footage with the rest of America and watched in disbelieve and horror. One of the worst parts for me was watching the collaspe of the WTC, knowing how many thousands were probably still inside.

DBF called me at 8:05a.m. PDT, on my way into my office. We don't watch the news in the morning, so he called me as soon as he found out what had happened. I walked into the building and my coworkers were huddled in the conference room watching the television.
My company let everyone go home to their families, which was a blessing. DBF has cousins who work on Wall Street, just minutes from the WTC, and we had not heard from them at that point. Thankfully, later in the day we confirmed that they were safe and sound.

I had just left my son off at school and was turning on the radio as I drove out the driveway. KGO (News radio) was talking about that the traffic planes had just been told to land in Oakland. I'm thinking OK that's wierd. They went on to talk about the fire at the World Trade Center. At this point I'm thinking there's a WTC in San Francisco (I'm a little slow in the morning
). About that time it was 7:00 and the announcer says for those of you just joining us let recap... that's when I heard and realized what had happened. It was so tempting to turn around and go home, but I kept on, after all I'm a Disaster Service Worker - it says so on my name badge . Seriously, although I would have loved to go home and glued myself to the TV, I knew there was nothing I could do, except get depressed. So I spent my day trying to get a live feed on the computer (underline trying) and listening to the radio. |
