Sea Notes

1. SAVING THE SEAS THROUGH YOUR SEAFOOD CHOICES

The ocean wildlife we love--from sea turtles to sharks, seabirds and
fishes--needs healthy habitats to survive. And the responsibility for
keeping the oceans healthy lies in our hands.

Global fishing practices have a tremendous impact on the health of
the oceans. The tonnage of fish caught by industrial-scale fleets,
the widespread use of gear that damages seafloor habitat, and the use
of gear that accidentally kills millions of unwanted animals each year
are rapidly changing the oceans--and not for the good.

Our Seafood Watch program offers a practical solution, an easy way for
individuals and businesses to make seafood choices that promote healthy
oceans now and for the future. October is National Seafood Month--an
ideal time to use our Seafood Watch consumer pocket guide when you buy
seafood at the restaurant or the market.

We've just made it even easier to carry the most up-to-date
Seafood Watch pocket guide with you. It's now available for cell phones
and other mobile devices with an Internet connection. Just log on to
seafoodwatch.org and you'll be automatically directed to the latest
online pocket guide, just in time for you to order your next
seafood meal.

Each of us can make a difference--through our individual buying
decisions, or by getting more involved as Seafood Watch advocates.
Now's the perfect time to take the plunge.

2. WHITE SHARK SETTLES IN

The young white shark in our Outer Bay exhibit is doing well. He's
navigating the exhibit with ease, and he's been wolfing down vitamin-laced
salmon steaks--as much as three pounds at a single meal. Our aquarists
hope he'll be with us for 200 days or more. You can see him when you
visit, or on our Outer Bay web cam.

3. MISSION TO THE DEEP

Be among the first to take control of a deep sea expedition in our new
Mission to the Deep exhibit. Using hands-on consoles, high-definition
video and state-of-the-art installations, it explores the pioneering
work of our colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

This year's Otter Days weekend will be even more entertaining as our
sea otters are joined by their freshwater cousins in Wild About Otters.
It's a fun-filled weekend celebrating a Central Coast icon. And you'll
find out how your daily routine can help--or hurt--these charismatic
creatures.
