Must-see movie: "Once"
"It may well be the best music film of our generation."
-- Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
Alex and I went to see a little indie movie Saturday night in the City (read: San Francisco) called "Once" -- wow. What a GOOD MOVIE. OMG this is why I allow hubby to drag me to these obscure movies... it is SOOO GOOD. It won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival, and it has garnered an almost unheard-of 97% "certified fresh" approval rating from movie review compilation Web site Rottentomatoes.com! <--that's really almost unheard of.
The movie is a musical--but a very natural one (not contrived where they break out in song in the middle of some scene and it seems so fake). The singing is real, sung by the actors, who are real musicians... and they sang the songs live for the camera--no lip syncing involved here. Primary character is played by Glen Hansard of the Irish rock band The Frames.
Hard to describe the plot; this is what the movie critic from the Boston Globe said in the beginning of his review:
"Once" is a wee slip of a movie, 85 minutes long and notably light on plot. Guy meets girl, guy writes a few songs with girl, guy and girl try to figure out what to do about their mutual attraction. We never learn their names, the movie's that basic.
Yet there are more emotions repressed and then sung out in this transcendent new Irish film than in a year of blockbusters, and in its brief running time, writer-director John Carney does something both profound and unexpected: He reinvents the movie musical as a genre of swooning rock 'n' roll realism.
You're not gonna see me post movie recommendations here often. If you happen to go into a larger city and this is showing, PLEASE do yourself a favor and see this.
It's rated R only because they say some swear words (in that way they all swear with that Irish accent) but that's it. No violence or sex. Just wonderful, incredible, amazing music.
And in case you aren't too sure about the music, go and visit FoxSearchlight's official Web page for the movie. You can hear the songs and watch some video clips. If you do a search on YouTube for "Glen Hansard" you'll be able to watch some live performances of their songs that they performed while on tour promoting the film.

BTW, the band in the movie are an actual band and are touring right now. They will be in SF and LA in September.
The movie opened here in June, but has already closed. I was going to see it too. Guess I'll have to wait for DVD.
